Baby Names

What does the name Cole make you think of?

Cole is one of our possibilities if we have another DS. DH loved the name the first time around but we went with Grant. Well he and a female coworker were chatting about baby names and he mentions that we always liked Cole. Well she says, "Like coleslaw? All that name makes me think of is coleslaw. People will call him Coleslaw." Now DH thinks people would call this child Coleslaw. I never even made the connection and I think it's kind of silly. What do you ladies think?

Re: What does the name Cole make you think of?

  • HA! I never would have made that connection. If anything, I would think coal or maybe even the store Kohl's, but never coleslaw. I don't think of any of those things though. I think it's a nice name and sounds perfect with Grant as a sibset. DH's cousin is named Cole and I've always liked it.

  • I would never think of coleslaw. Cole is a character from one of my favorite books, so I think of a very attractive man with a boyish charm. It's definitely a positive name to me.

  • Coleslaw? What?!? No. I think it's a great name. I know someone who named her baby Cole. Tragically, he passed away, so it's a sad association for me but a good solid name.

  • Aww, it makes me think of "Mr. Holland's Opus," when he sings (and signs) "Beautiful Boy" to his son, Cole. "Beautiful beautiful beautiful, beautiful Cole..." Such a sweet part.

His Cole was short for Coltrane, so I think of that too.

But this is why we decided not to share names with anyone we know, other than close family. Everyone has an opinion and can ruin it in an instant!

  • My DS is Cole, so obviously I love the name :)

He is 4 and never once has someone called him Coleslaw. My nephew (Who was 9 when DS was born) did think we named him Coal at first, and was so confused why we named him after "the stuff Santa brings bad kids". lol

I will say, however, that people mishear Cole as Joel, Paul, or Colt fairly often.  And I've been asked if he was named after the guy from Martin, or the demon on Charmed, or the kid from The Sixth Sense. :::eye roll:::

I love the name Grant also! It's in the running for #2 if its a boy. We might have the same sibset. lol

  • I really like the name Cole.  One of my friends was just saying it is probably her top choice if she has another DS.  Her first is Nolan.  I also LOVE Grant.  It is our top choice right now for #3 (if it's a boy).  Also on our list are Noel (although DH thinks of the First Noel and thinks people will say Noelle like a girl), and Brooks.  I have never associated Cole with Coleslaw.

The first associations I get are Cole Porter and Cole Haan. Totally good!

Cole sounds so nice with Grant!

Ohhhh, I never watched Charmed but I am very familiar with Julian McMahon (or rather his bare butt) from Nip/Tuck.

  • I know a few Coles, and no one calls any of them coleslaw. That's just idiotic. I do have a cousin named Cole. That's all the name Cole made me think of.
