Besides Zofran...

What do you ladies do for morning sickness? I have to take half a Zofran every day just to keep food down but I'm still losing weight. Do you guys try anything natural? I know it won't hurt the baby or they wouldn't tell me to use it, but I still can't shake the guilt after popping one. Just had to shoot out of bed again tonight to make it to the bathroom. I really don't want to have to take one. Ugh.

Re: Besides Zofran...

  • I suffered for 3 mOnths and didn't take any drugs. My MFM said if you can pee you don't need drugs. It absolutely sucked and it was very hard especially being a teacher but I made it through. At 16 w it stopped.

  • I took the Zofran and didn't feel guilty...if the Dr says it is safe, I don't see any reason to suffer and be uncomfortable. Also, weight the benefits...if you are still not gaining weight, that means that your baby is taking what it needs from your body and its reserves since you can't hold food down, and you aren't going to be as healthy as you should.

  • I took 1-2 Zofran a day as needed. But my OB also suggested B6 and 1/2 a Unisom at night.

  • Zofran did nothing for me.  I take Phenergan and I have a much larger appetite (and food stays down 99% of the time).  Yes, I would prefer not to be on medication, but the benefits outweigh the risks...especially if you're losing weight.  Are you able to keep fluids down?  Without medicine I cannot.  I have found that taking it easy in the morning is a must.  I don't get up and take a shower right away, etc. no running around the house...that's what did me in my last pregnancy I think (I was throwing up around the clock with DS, even on meds).  Also, keeping hydrated really does make a difference, and keeping something in my stomach.  Instead of eating large meals, snack throughout the day.  When it was really bad I was eating a 1/2 cup of fruit/pretzels, etc. or so every 30-60 minutes.  lJolly ranchers help take the edge off too (and much cheaper than preggo pops).

  • There is a great natural remedy out that they are starting to use in surgery to help patients who are coming off the anestesia. My OB said it was fine and it is a miracle.

However, don't feel guilty because your body will be in worse shape if that baby takes from your reserves too long. Mine got better about 14 weeks.

  • If you were already prescribed Zofran, you may be beyond my remedy, but I used lemons. I mixed equal parts of San Pellegrino (or any bubbly mineral water) with lemonade and it quieted the nausea, even if just for a short time, and it gave me some relief. I ate lemon in anything it could go in, mostly pastries. I tried a number of other natural remedies (ginger, motion sickness bands, etc) but lemon was the only thing that would work for me. Now that the nausea has passed, I still crave lemons every single day! I cut up a lemon each morning and squeeze it into my water all day.

My doctor also recommended Unisom and B vitamins but I never tried it.

Good luck, morning sickness is miserable. I hope you find relief soon.

  • I took Zofran for a few weeks.  It was a huge help!!  I couldn't function without it. I didn't want to take any meds but I decided that the benefits were totally worth it.  Also, I have a friend who took it her whole pregnancy and her daughter is a perfect 8 year old.   I hope you feel better soon!

  • I had hyperemesis until 16 weeks and was taking 8mg zofran every 6 hours on top of being on a reglan pump and phenergen suppositories... and that was just to allow me to swallow my spit, I still couldn't eat or drink. (I ended up having to have home care) - I was finally able to eat/drink after they put me on a steroid treatment.

I still have to take 2 to 3 8mg zofran daily to eat normally (I'm 25 weeks tomorrow) - I would talk to your OB about increasing your dose. I was concerned about using it when I first got sick, but felt much better after having my OB tell me that his wife was on Zofran through all her pregnancies, and his kids are all healthy and fine. So far, our LO is doing wonderfully, and is active and growing like a weed!

Some other things they had me try before the reglan pump, etc. were Preggie Pops (they're a sucker - you can get them online, not sure where else), SeaBands bracelets (from CVS/Walgreens), B6, anything with ginger (seabands has a ginger gum that worked for a while), and water with lemon.

Hoping you'll feel better and it won't last like mine has!

  • I did Zofran last PG. I also wore my Psi Bands every day.

This PG I wanted to skip meds. My MW asked me to eat protein every time I felt sick and it worked very well. Ideas for high-protein snacks:

    baked beans
    deviled eggs
    guac+ whole grain crackers
quesadilla with cheddar and beans or meat
    jerky
    hummus
    fage
    couscous
    edamame
    oatmeal

Mint tea is soothing on the tummy as is ginger (tea, candy, dried etc.)
