Combo varicella+MMR vaccine=sick child?

My DD is 4.5 years old and had her 2nd varicella and MMR vaccines on Monday March 5th. On Thursday, she developed nausea, vomiting, and fatigue. She has been like this for the last 2 days and still feels bad today (Saturday). Before I chalk it up to a flu bug, I was just curious if any others had this issue with their child and these vaccines?

Re: Combo varicella+MMR vaccine=sick child?

  • I feel like that many days away from the shot seems a little more like a virus.  When my dd got the hep A  and Varicella, she started crying and her heart rate was racing like crazy a couple hours later.  She spiked a fever and ended up that she had an ear infection- I'm sure completely aggrevated by the shot, but not caused by it.

  • Could be a GI bug that she already had. Flu is respiratory. We've "gotten lucky" several times that one of them has caught something around the same time as their shots. But usually when one goes down, they all do, shot or no shot. I only have one that has had a true reaction, but it is sort of unrelated to the vaccine, and more with having a foreign substance in his body that reacts because of his medical condition. The MMR shot just happens to be a trigger, same as bisphosponates.
  • With certain shots, reactions can manifest 3wks to a month after the shot.

That said, there is a nasty bug going around causing diarrhea and vomiting so at this point, I'm more inclined to think that's what your LO has.
