7 1/2 months pregnant and going on 55+ hours vent

I am exhausted!!!! I have worked 55 hours this week and still have 1 more day to go to a day off, then I get to work everyday next week also. Luckily my boss was nice enough to let me have Sunday off (whatever). It really bothers me that I feel that I am being used because I am pregnant and because I am going on the maternity leave that I deserve, she feels that she needs to take a vacation in Jan, Feb, and March. Her exact words were "Your leaving me for 4 months, so I should be able to take as much time off as I want to before you leave. At least I'm doing it now and not when your 36 weeks pregnant" I cant wait to go to my doctor next week and have him put me on a modified work (hbp, swelling) schedule. She is so clueless. *Vent over* :) Thanks!

  • Ugh, I am sorry!  That is a crazy insane thing for her to say.  Does this woman have a heart?

  • What do you do?  Has your boss ever been pregnant?

  • I just worked for 3 weeks straight, I have no idea how many hours I put in between 33 and 36 weeks.  it sucks, but it can be done.  Your boss's attitude kind of sucks, but at the same time, if she won't be able to take any time off while you're gone, I would expect she would take some now.

  • I work for a bank. My manager has never been pregnant. She is to involved in herself. Perfect example was last year in April my FIL passed away and I worked on the day of the viewing so she could attend a meeting. She was suppose to be back by a certain time and she showed up an hour late. She said that she forgot and was having lunch with a couple of other managers. She still doesnt understand why I was so upset. She blew it off like it was nothing, but heaven forbid she misses out on a lunch with a friend because I have to pick my sick 5 yo DD from school. She's just very selfish and doesn't care about anyone but herself. She told me that because I was salary that it didnt matter if the doctor put me on modified work, I told her to call HR and when she did, she was suprised that the DR could put me out on modified work. She's dumb.
  • She's getting coverage for me while I'm gone and will be able to take 2 more mini vacations while I'm out so it's not an issue of her not taking any time, she's getting time and help. She's believes that I should'nt be able to be out that long and her words "having a baby cant be that bad, I dont see why you cant come and work for me for Memorial Day weekend, the baby will already be 2 weeks old." I appreciate  the fact that I can take the time off for parental leave and know what it is like to take the bare minimum after having a child but she's crazy to think that I will be in when my baby is 2 weeks old so she can go to Cabo for a summer vacation, which by the way she has coverage for.

Do you have an HR?  I think I'd pass this info on to them.  She is being terrible.

  • She sounds like a selfish c*nt!  It's probably a good thing that she does not have children.  I hope that your HR department can help you.

  • I feel your pain.  I'm 38 weeks and have worked 60 hours a week (in 5 days a week) for the last 4-5 weeks. I do orthopedic surgery and am literally in the operating room every day, and don't always get a chance to eat something.  It happens.  While your boss does sound awful selfish, don't necessarily expect your doctor to give you modified duty.  My doctors know what I do, how much lifting, etc is involved and really will only give a note if it is medically necessary unless it can be something that is simply modified (such as moving a patient from stretcher to bed, I let other people do it rather than having a doctors note limiting me to 20 lbs lifting or whatever).

Agreed - if it really becomes an issue, her statement here sounds like an HR violation. Everyone MUST be treated the same, pregnant or not.

  • I would be careful if I were you.  I think the way I was pushing myself at work is the reason my water broke at 34 weeks.  You need to rest and take it easy or your boss might find herself short-handed earlier than expected.

    What a b!tch, seriously.
