NBR: Home alarm systems

Our neighbor had a break in this week in broad daylight and needless to say, everyone is a little one edge and re-checking locks, entry points to their homes, etc.

We have considered a home alarm and now thinking about it again. Does anyone have any recommendations or suggestions on a system or how to shop around for this service? Typically I see free installation offers with monthly payments...those are forever?

Would love your experience and advice ladies! Thanks!

Re: NBR: Home alarm systems

  • Our home alarm has 4 legs and a waggly tail. My friends that have security systems pay a monthly fee.

  • There are tons of systems out there that are good. They usually have a contract period, like a cell phone, with introductory rates that go away eventually. Do you park in the garage in your home or in the driveway? I ask because if you park in the garage, you may want to ask if they offer a remote lock/unlock for the alarm, similar to your car, so that you don't have to rush to get out before the dang alarm goes off. I've had a system before, can't remember what it was because it's been about 6 years, but most are pretty reputable. You can always try checking Yelp or BBB.org to see how people rate them.

  • we ave ADT, we did one of the "free installations" and we pay $35 per month.  It also includes a fire alarm that is connected to their monitoring station.  We live in a very safe area, but when DH worked nights it made me feel better to keep the "stay" mode on.

  • My parents had one, it did make me feel better at night when I was home alone. Now we have a great Pyrenees and a Boston terrier as our security system.

  • Scary.  This happened to our neighbours at our old house.  I hope you're not all too shaken.  We just have our dog, even though DH works afternoons and nights a lot.  She probably costs more a year than an alarm though!

DH responds to alarms at work and says it often takes the alarm company several steps before police are notified.  When I was 14 and my parents were moving, my dad pushed a button thinking it was for the ceiling fan.  It was a silent panic alarm.  The phone rang a handful of times before we left 30 minutes later, and then as the agent locked up, the police arrived, but no sirens or lights or panic.  The agent had to identify herself, and he explained the alarm company had been the one calling to find out if there was a false alarm or real distress. Hmm It was a pretty big name company too.  I would ask about specific protocols and steps in your area with each company.

DH also said the policy in our city is something like 2 or 3 false alarms and the police won't automatically respond for the alarm again (and one house nearby had it set off ffrequently by a window that kept rattling in the wind).

When we were renting there was an old alarm that we could arm.  It wasn't monitored anymore, but it would beep and sound when you came in/out and if not disabled in time.  I felt better knowing that would likely scare people off.  We have a system here at our house now from the previous owners, but it's not monitored and we don't know the codes to play with and arm it.

  • We use ADT. It really makes me feel a lot safer. We pay about $40/mo, and our house was already wired for it when we moved in.

  • I don't know how they work now, but growing up we had Brinks and when we moved to Oregon from Seattle our house was left empty while it was on sale and my mom and I would go up and check on it every weekend. Well....someone cut the phone lines and it shut down the system. It could go off, but it never alerted Brinks or police or anyone. So there was someone squatting in my house. So so scary. Hopefully they work differently now.
