Health & Exercise

Please educate me

After the birth of DD I lost too much weight. I've been trying to gain since she was 4 months old (so like a year now) and I'm juuuusssttt finally out of the underweight category. I feel like I have to eat a crazy ammount to keep my weight up, and have resorted to eating things like cookies and higher fat things on purpose just to get by. I do also eat healthy things too.. but like I said, it just has to be a lot.

During the last few months it's been winter so I'm not exercising hardly at all and this is the time when I am finally able to gain a few pounds. I really want to start exercising, but I can hardly keep up with my weight as it is and I am scared to think of what will happen if I'm burning extra calories.

I have had my thyroid checked and it's normal. Any advice?

  • Just how much are/were you exercising?  Were you or are you breastfeeding?  If so, BFing requires a huge amt of calories.

After I had DS, he was EBF.  I ended up losing 80lbs (I did NOT have an extra 80lbs to lose) and it was all I could do, to keep from losing any more.  Once DS was weaned, I slowly started to be able to gain weight and get to a healthy range.  It just took a while.

Now I'm pregnant again and my DH and I are a little concerned that this may happen again.  However, this time we know it'll only be a temporary thing.

I used to walk several miles almost every day. I was breast feeding until DD was 10 months old, but it's been 7 months now since she's been weaned and I've only been able to put on a couple pounds. I got all the way down to 113 at one point, and for my height at 5'6" I was skin and bones. My doctor told me that being underweight may be a reason my cycles are still messed up and we havn't been able to get pregnant again. Sooo I really want to fix this.

  • You could look at some athlete nutrition plans (like for triathletes and swimmers) - they go through a lot of calories (as in, they eat more for breakfast than I do all day!) - you won't need to eat that much but it will give you a sense of what your calorie sources should be. You want to feed your body and then fuel your workout, so add an extra snack (ie full fat yogurt and granola) that's going to compensate for the workout burn.
  • Maybe supplement with fish oil?

  • Have you ever tracked your calories to see what you were actually taking in? It's possible that you feel like you're eating a lot, but perhaps not. I know a lot of moms who get so busy with the LOs and everything else that they are actually under-fueling their bodies without even realizing it. That said, if your doctor has checked you out and you feel well otherwise, try adding some high calorie foods that aren't as filling. Use more olive oil when cooking and flavoring things (1 Tbs = 100 cals) and snack on dried fruit and nuts.
