Help! DD fights my boob!

Hi all!  I'm a ftm and my little girl has reflux.  We have tried a couple different medications and we have finally seen some improvement on prevacid.  She still spits up large amounts, but it doesnt seem to bother her and she is gaining weight.  However, breastfeeding has recently become a horrible chore.  She used to eat wonderfully but we started having a few issues around 4 weeks.  We were trying to give her one bottle a day, but it seemed like she was getting nipple confusion so we switched to one bottle every 5 days and switched the bottle type.  She seemed to do better with that for a while.  In the past two weeks or so, she has begun fighting me, it almost seems like, while breatfeeding.  Sometimes she latches onto the first side ok and eats fine for a while..but then she starts kicking and and squirming and turning her head back and forth.  After the first side, there is definitely no latching onto the next sometimes.  She screams and fights.  It's perfectly fine if she isnt hungry, but up until about two weeks ago, she was eating each side, about 10-15 min total every 3 or so hours and usually 4-5, sometimes 6 hrs over night.  Now, she will do that sometimes, but usually its 4 min on one side every 2.5 hrs, even over night.  And we have even had 4 or 5 times where she has finished on one side and then fought me on the other, so i dont force her, but 10 minutes later she is acting hungry and back on she goes!  Stressful if you are trying to do something or need to go somewhere!  Im trying to ebf on demand, but with this craziness, idk how much longer i can take it.  Has anyone else had a similar situation or have any advice? Thanks!

  • Mine fights me sometimes but it's when she has to poop.  She will latch and nurse for a few minuites then just scream then latches again.  After she poops or gets the gas out she is fine.  good luck

  • DS fights latching if he has to burp. As far as the eating less more frequently, I think that's normal.

  • For me, DD sometimes acts like this if she hasn't nursed in a while and I have a more forceful let-down - I've noticed it's always my right side, and that side is more forceful when I pump, too.  If I pump for a minute or two and then try again, she latches on fine.

  • I had a similar situation with my LO who is only 2 wks.  In the hospital and when we first came home, she latched wonderfully.  The lactation consultants and visiting nurst were all thrilled and confirmed she was getting milk, swallowing, ect.  Suddenly, every couple feedings she was freaking out.  Thrashing around, pushing my nipple away, and then getting fussy.  Other times she would latch perfectly.  The fighting was becoming more and more frequent and I was getting beyond frustrated, especially in the middle of the night.  When she went to the pedi, she wasn't gaining enough and was still jaundice so I just started pumping.  Although I hate pumping, its a lot less frustrating and I know shes eating, which was becoming an issue for us.

  • I have the same problem. My DS was such a good eater. His put on 5 pounds since birth and is 6 weeks old today. He'll act like he's so hungry but won't latch. Or he'll latch then pull off and spit out all the milk in his mouth. It's just been the last week or so so I haven't talked to the doctor about it. I give him a few minutes to nap on my lap or chest after burping and he's usually hungry again. It's frustrating because it's simply so time consuming. I feel like I'm constantly feeding but the idea of him going hungry breaks my heart
  • Thanks so much everyone!
