Non-religious adoption agencies

DH and I are currently pursuing foster/adoption. However, we would like to investigate domestic infant adoption a bit. We are not religious and would prefer to use an agency that also does not express a religious preference. Looking at the state level has only turned up one seemingly viable option, but I'm not sure how to verify the legitimacy of the agency. Should I be looking at national agencies as well? I guess I'm really just lost on the best way to approach this.

We're with the Independent Adoption Center.  They will work with you regardless of religious preference.

  • Some religious agencies are SUPER religious, and some aren't rigid about it.  We used a secular agency because we're atheist and agnostic.  The religious agencies were way too religious for us and most weren't as ethical as we'd like...one suggested we find a church and pretty much lie about being religious.  Disgusting.

  • I think, even if a religious agency didn't have strict religious requirements, it would still make me feel a little hypocritical to work with them. Ya know....."I don't have a need for your institution on a regular basis, but, if it means getting a child, then maybe you could be useful after all."   Something about that logic just feels wrong to me personally. But, having said that, Lutheran Services was the licensing agency for our foster care license, and I never felt weird or hypocritical about that. Maybe because I knew that our religious preference (or lack thereof) would not be a deciding factor for any potential placements.
