  what sort of tranquilizer?

  I know people that have received morphine in the early stages of labor because their doctors would not approve of an epidural before 3cm dilated. once they were at or past 3cm they received an epidural

  Yes, I got both.

  The night after my water broke (still no contractions) I got started on pitocin, and they gave my morphine while I slept.

  The next day the pitocin was a killer, and I got three rounds of fentanyl (a narcotic) before yelling at the nurse for my epidural, about 24 hours after I started the pitocin. I was only 2 cm when they finally gave it to me. It was heaven.
