I've spent the last several months drooling over all of the beautiful wraps you ladies have and desperately want to beg DH for one for Mother's Day, but we have a few issues and I'm not sure it really makes sense to buy one now, especially with our very tight budget.
1). DH and I are not small people. At all. So any wrap we plan to use will have to be quite large, as large as possible = $$. And hard to find larger wraps on TBW, plus I find the forums confusing.
2). Our DS is turning 2 next week. He's still a very small ex-preemie, weighing in at about 21 lbs, maybe less after the stomach flu he's had all week). But at 2, how much use will we get out of it with him? Is it worth the $$?
3) We live in Florida and it's really hot and sticky. I don't like sweating and our Ergo Sport, while still fairly comfy, is black and attracts heat. I need something breathable, but sturdy. Or is it just too hot to wear a kiddo in this weather?
4). DS has sensory issues and is easily overstimulated. I feel that a high back carry would really help him interact with people but still have the security of being near me or DH to help calm him. I'm assuming a wrap would be the best choice but not opposed to the idea of a different carrier.
5) DH and I are hopefully not done building our family, so a wrap that's infant friendly is certainly preferred. So should I beg for a woven? And which one? And where can we find one cheap?
Re: Convince me to buy a woven! :)
With my two year old, I like my neobulle because it's sturdy and it's the right length ( a 4) for me to do a ruck tied in front. It's a very quick easy carry to do when you have a LO who wants to be up and down a lot.
I also like my hoppediz (another sturdy wrap) which is a size 6 for doing a double hammock, it's a carry that takes a bit more effort to get LO on your back, so I used it when we're doing a long walk that she won't be getting up and down from.
Both those wraps are reasonably thick. If it's warm where you are you might look into a linen wrap. They're supportive but nice and airy.
How much use you'll get out of the wrap is really a lifestyle choice. Do you go for walks often? Do you think LO will want to be carried vs being in a stroller or walking?
Good quality wraps can cost money but they also resell easily. Some wraps are very pricey but that can be because they've been released in a limited edition or are 'fashionable" colourways. I personally wouldn't pay the prices some people seem to be willing to pay, but we have a budget to stick to.
You can get good quality, pretty wraps that don't break the bank, if you're happy to go with a colourway that is commonly available.

I see size 6s and 7s posted just about every day on FSOT on TBW. If you have ever used a Moby, a Moby is a tad longer than a size 7 (Moby is 5.5m, a 7 is 5.2m). That said with a woven wrap, there are more variations that help use different length wraps for different sized bodies (tying in the front, versus the bacl, verus the hip, versus a knotless, etc.) For example, as a size 12, almost 5 months pregnant, I use a 5 (4.2m) for double hammock, but I could use a 3 (3.2 m) for a ruck. This chart helps to show a bit of the variability (albiet it does not take parent size into consideration) https://didymos.com/index.php?s=groesse. Somewhere on TBW is a post of wrap sizes and carries by size of the wearer, but I can't find it.
Is there a babywearing group near you wher you could try some things out? As for the board, I think you just have to read it a lot for the abbrevations to sink it. Have you read this post on choosing a wrap basics? https://www.thebabywearer.com/forum/showthread.php?34446-Choosing-a-Wrap-FAQs

But at 2, how much use will we get out of it with him? Is it worth the $$? If you choose to wear him a lot, you will get good use out of it. You can bacl carry while cooking, doing dishes, laundry, going for walks, in and out of stores, instead of putting him in the shopping carts, etc. It really depends on what you and kiddo are up for. In terms of weight, 21 lbs is still a fine weight to wear since you've already built up your strength with the Ergo.

Or is it just too hot to wear a kiddo in this weather? I wore my cotton wraps all summer in DC area--also swamp-like. That said, you can geta wrap with linen in it for more breeziness.

I'm assuming a wrap would be the best choice but not opposed to the idea of a different carrier. I don't know that wrapping is your only option-- a mei tai with a breathable panel may also be cool and great for back carries. They do may them with extra-long straps if you feel that would be best for you and your DH. I will say that I do think wearing in general is great for helping kids feel comfortable and less overwhlemed. I do adore wrapping, though!
5) DH and I are hopefully not done building our family, so a wrap that's infant friendly is certainly preferred. So should I beg for a woven? And which one? And where can we find one cheap? Many wraps are good for NB to toddler. Wrap ethusiasts seek out "toddler worthy" wraps that are extra supportive, but I've never come across a wrap that would be bad for a NB. The FSOT forum on TBW is your best bet for finding a cheaper wrap. That said, they aren't cheap. They just aren't. The good news is that they tend to retain much of their value and you may be able to resell at some point for close to what you paid.

I don't have a woven (yet!!! Next baby due Sept 2nd and my birthday is the 14th...guess what I'm asking for!), but I do have an almost 2 year old. I think how much you'll use a woven or any new wrap at this point depends on your temperament AND your LO's. We started off wearing all the time, but our son is very active and wants to go go go! I think I used the Ergo the last time in December (at 20 months) and seriously doubt we'll use it with him again. He does like to be in a stroller, so we use that occasionally, or walk/carry him.
Since I'm expecting especially, I'm trying to encourage him to walk as much as possible while holding my hand. I have back problems when not pregnant, and OW when pregnant. Wearing wouldn't work out well for me at this point even if DS were interested.
