Working Moms

Working Midnights

I just interviewed for a job working midnights at a nursing home.. Hours are going to be 11p-7a working four days with two days off back to back... Any other mommas work a similar schedule? How did it work for you and LO? I'm still expecting so I don't know what to expect when Jax gets here.. My moms gonna babysit for free while I work and stuff.. And his dad goes to school/works through the day.. So he's always gonna have one of us.. And I plan to pump while I'm away because I'm gonna breastfeed only.. I know for now this will work for me because I'm up all night as it is.. lol. But I'd like to know how it's worked for some others.

  • I think it's reasonable if you have childcare during the day as well so you can get some sleep.

  • I work 12 hours. 6pm-6:30am.  I work 3 shifts a week.  DS goes to DC for 5 hours the day after my shift.  I keep DD home with me.  The sleep I get is whatever nap she takes.  Usually about 2.5-3 hours.  I don't work 2 nights in a row, so it doesn't matter that I only got a few hours of sleep cause I can sleep that night.  I've always worked nights, so I'm just used to it.  If your going to work 2 nights in a row, you may need someone for a few hours to get a bit more sleep.  Also starting at 11pm you could get a few hours in before going to work.  It's totally doable, youjust have to find a good routine and schedule that works for you.

  • I do 12 hours as well, so 7pm-7:30 am twice a week. It works out fine.

I don't know if I would love going in at 10pm, I have done that sometimes for overtime and I feel like my house is already all buttoned up and everyone's sleeping and I am sneaking out the door quietly....but that's with two school aged kids. :)

It is hard, but you can swing it as long as you have very reliable daycare/child care in evenings and the next morning.

    Good luck!
