3rd Trimester

So Im way confused about kick counts

Im sure this is asked all the time-

Im not supposed to feel 5 kicks an hour no matter what Im doing right? when is the baby supposed to sleep?

How I understand them is I lay down and get to 10 movements. I got like 7 in 10 minutes so I called it good.

So what if I lay down, and he doesnt feel like moving? If hes sleeping hell move if I push on him but then stops. Am I supposed to run to l&d?

It seemed so easy when my ob told me to do it but now that Ive tried Im confused. TIA

Re: So Im way confused about kick counts

  • My midwife said to do kick counts in either the hour after eating breakfast or the hour after eating dinner.  If you are not feeling kicks, lay on your left side.  If you don't get the number of kicks they want in an hour (mine OB says 6), then drink some orange juice, lay on your left side and try again.  If that doesn't work, then I think I was supposed to call them.

  • No, I was instructed to do it once a day, during a high movement time, and count how many minutes it takes to get to 10 kicks.  If an hour passes and I don't meet 10, thats when I was told to call.

She definately doesn't move this much all day every hour.  Usually I count after dinner, because I can feel her then.  But most of the day I don't feel her at all.

  • I usually don't do kick counts because I feel baby all the time.  When I don't recall feeling her, I pick a time of the day where I know she's active.  Right after dinner and up until bed time is when I feel her the most.  So if she was quiet or I was too busy to notice, I make a point to sit down after dinner and feel for her.  That is typically how I did kick counts in all my pregnancies if I became concerned.

  • If your feeling the baby throughout the day your good..I only do kick counts when it seems that I havent felt him kick in awhile and then I will eat something and drink something and lay down and try to get ten kicks in an hour and almost always I will get 10 kicks in about 10 minutes and then I know everything is fine :o)
  • Movement will come and go throughout the day depending on what you are doing and what you eat.  Do the kick counts when LO tends to be most active.  For me it was in the evening an hour or so after dinner and some ice cream or a cold drink always got DS going with kick counts through the roof!

  • I was told 10 kicks/per hour - twice a day. Not necessarily when YOU want to feel them- but when LO is active. I don't even bother- my babe has been so active I haven't even bothered counting. I think I'm having a circus monkey LOL

  • No. My doctor told me (and the nurses in L&D) that you are to pick a typical high movement time. If you don't get 10 movements in an hour, then drink something cold and sugary like soda. Lay down and if you still don't get 10 movements in an hour after that, then call. Movements don't have to be true kicks to count either.

  • It's supposed to be when the baby is most active, not at any time.  My kid is a day sleeper and gets active at night.  I typically do my kick counts at night (around 9) as that's when he's most active.  You need to do them generally about the same time every day and if you can't get a kick count of 10 within 2 hours, then you need to call L&D.

This is me exactly.  I have his activity patterns pretty much nailed down and I would notice if something wasn't right and I would start doing the kick counts.  He is moving very frequently though so I have only done them about 3 times since 28 weeks.

  • Babies move constantly in the womb - even when sleeping (they sleep like 80% of the time at this point),  So at any hour of the day, you should be getting at least 10 movements an hour.  Of course they may be harder to feel is baby is sleeping, but baby is still moving.

As previous posters stated, if you are ever concerned you can drink some orange juice or something and lay down on your left side.

This.  My OB told me it's not really necessary to do every day if you're feeling the baby move around a lot, (but to it every once in awhile to get an idea of how long it usually takes to get to 10), then count kicks if you get concerned that you haven't felt baby move in awhile.  I was told fewer than 10 kicks in 2 hours means I should call.

  • I get confused about this as well. I feel her move throught the day but not every hour. she doesnt realy have a schedule and sometimes I can drink a cold drink and it wont phase her. if I go a day without feeling her move or half a day that is then I will freak out and start counting
