flipping to sleep in the night - sleeping question...

So I know a lot of you went through bad nights when your babies started flipping from their back to the their stomach at night.

Callie has been a stomach sleeper since the beginning pretty much. Recently, she's been waking crying at night and only wants to lay on her back when I try to get her back to sleep. I'm starting to think that she wants to toss and turn in her sleep now and that's waking her up. It's been a beast trying to get her back to sleep. Last night it was an hour and half of Ferberizing. The night before an hour.

So my question is, how long will it be before she can start rolling over/moving around in her sleep without waking herself up???

Mommy needs some relief!

  • Hmmm...my LO can move around in her sleep.  Is there anything possibly obstructing her in the crib (sleep sack, blanket, stuffed animal)?

She does sleep with a blanket. Maybe getting tangled up in that is waking her up?

I just figured she needed to get used to being able to roll over in her sleep. The last few nights she finally fell back asleep on her back and I when I went to wake her up she was on her side. She hasn't slept any other way than on her stomach since like 4 weeks old. So strange!

  • It could be the blanket. If K gets tangled up in her blanket when tossing and turning she'll wake up fussy... But if her blanket is off of her she tosses and turns without waking up.

She also gets irritated if she rolls and hits her lovey or small stuffed animal. Seems like she'll roll all over the place as long as she doesn't get tangled up or bump into something.... But if she bumps into something or gets tangled up in her blanket she gets cranky.

  • I know it's common when they start a new skill like crawling, sitting up, etc, for them to want to practice it over and over and have trouble sleeping for a few nights.  (We had a few nights when she first learned to sit up that I'd find her sitting up or on her knees holding onto the crib bars, eyes closed, bawling!) Maybe it's something similar, like she's just kind of figured out she has the freedom to move around in her sleep, but she's not used to it?

I'd just keep doing what you're doing, and hopefully it will be short lived. When you go in and do your checks, lay her down however you think she sleeps most comfortably and kind of rub her back or her tummy and comfort her, then leave her to fall back to sleep on her own. :( No fun!

  • My son is generally a tummy sleeper too, and for the last few months he will occasionally cry out, and I check him on the video monitor and he's rolling over, but he goes right back to sleep. We still use the sleep sack because he moves so much. Occasionally I use a blanket, and he usually loses that halfway through the night, and I feel like he sleeps worse on those nights.

He doesn't sleep with a lovey either, I've tried introducing one and he just seems to get distracted. His crib is very minimalist, still!

This is exactly how I'm finding her!

  • Em also tosses and turns in the night a lot. She doesn't wake up though. Even if she is awake a little, she's not crying or anything, just sucks her thumb to get back to sleep.  Could it just be that something is bothering her?

It very well could also be teething. I thought maybe she had an ear infection last week/over the weekend, but she had a Dr appt Monday and they said her ears looked fine. I think she's been working on those upper teeth for sometime. So maybe they're just really bothering her too.
