My boys were born at 29w6d. I received two rounds of steroids before their birth. The bigger boy (2lb10oz) was intubated at birth, but was breathing room air within 24 hours. My smaller guy (1lb7oz) was not as lucky. He was severely IUGR and is still on oxygen support at home. He has chronic lung disease or BPD.

There's really no rhyme to these patterns - each preemie is so different. DS was breathing room air around the two week mark, I think. He got back up to birth weight at exactly two weeks so 3 lbs, 11 oz. Not sure what "conditions" is an inquiry about?
My little boy was born two weeks ago at 25 weeks weighing 1lb 15oz. I did get the two rounds of steroids thankfully just before he was born. He was able to breath on his own for the first week, then got tired and went with the Assistance. He had surgery to close hisnPDA valve last Friday. He's been doing exceptionally well and they trying to get him back to breaking on his own. I know he bas a long way to go yet, but I'm just curious as I'm not familiar with preemie and tell fact that I went into labor in the USA while on a 2 day trip to vegas (I'm from canada) has definitely left me unprepared and without resources.

Wow! There's another mom that posts here that was away from home when she gave birth. Maybe she'll pop in.
Hopefully closing the PDA will help with his breathing. I know for a lot of babies that is a turning point in their NICU journey.

My son (23 weeker) was on the vent for just over 4 weeks, CPAP for another month, and then the nasal cannula for over 2 months. He had BDP, PDA ligation at 10 days old, and a surgery at about 36 weeks for ROP that slowed things down. He had a lot of episodes, so it was a long journey. He got off support for good at about 42 weeks, he was almost 8 pounds by then. He was discharged 2 weeks later. In fact, we thought he was coming home on O2, but an extended stay b/c of a NEC scare kept us in the NICU for 3 extra weeks and they were able to wean him off soon before discharge.
How is your LO doing?

28 weekers here. Barely got a second round of steriods in before delivery. They were intubated at birth, and each had a failed cpap trial the first week since blood gases were good and they were on low vent settings. Miles went to cpap after 30 weeks and Owen at about 31 weeks. They were both on cpap for a little over a week before switching to high flow nasal cannulas. Miles came off the cannula at 33 weeks and Owen was off and on until 37 weeks. Birth weights were 2lbs and 2.7 lbs. I can't remember the weights when they came off breathing support, but I know it was over 3lbs. Miles had a PDA treated with Indocin. Everything improved with him after that.
My DD was a 28 weeker. She was intimated after about 3 hrs of life. CPAP on day 3, high flow cannula at about day 8, then they move her to regular cannula on home settings (1/4 L at 100%) about five days before they discharged her home on O2 @ 38 weeks. She has BPD. She is now weaning from her home O2 at 4 weeks adjusted. I got both rounds of steroids.
Congrats on your LO! Can't believe you had such an unexpected delivery. I bet that was very scary! Best of luck to you & him!

I'm the one BH was referring to, although there's one more mommy on here who had a similar situation. Having a preemie away from home is no fun, but manageable.
OP - it sounds like your son is doing really well! My 26 weeker was intubated at first (for about 2 days) and then was on the CPAP for a few weeks. He was on the canula for many weeks and came home on oxygen with feeds. We discontinued that within just a few weeks, though.
Urbanflowerpot is right, though. All babies are so different. The fact that you got steroids really helps. I didn't get any steroid shots, which may partly explain why my son was on breathing support for so long. Or, it could just be luck, though.
Good luck! Keep us posted. I hope things continue to go smoothly for you.
My 26 weeker was intubated for a total of 10 days, CPAP for another 2 weeks and then nasal canula for another 2 weeks. She was just over 4 lbs when she was finally breathing on her own.
My 24 weekers had pretty severe BPD and needed a little more support than most. They were 1lb 5oz and 1lb 8oz at birth, and I got both rounds of steroid shots. They were on vents for 7 weeks (until about 31w adjusted), and then spent a week on CPAP. Audrey went to hi-flow cannula after that, and Grayson needed to go back on the vent for 5 more days before going straight to a cannula as well (they were around 4lbs at this point). They were switched to low-flow around 38w adj, and they both came home on O2. They needed the home O2 until about 2 months past their due date (8lbs-ish, I think?). They will be 1 in just over a week though and they are doing wonderful now!

My LO is still on breathing support, but here's what happened to her so far.
She was born at 1 pound 12 ounces and was on the vent for about 3 weeks, CPAP for 2, and just started the hi-flow nasal cannulas 2 days ago at 4L and is now at 3L.
I had both steroid shots. She was born at 26w2d. Right now she is right at 3 pounds.

Do you have a new preemie or just expecting one? Sorry if I missed your intro, I've been gone for a few days.
