Hi Ladies, I have Blue Cross Blue Shield and someone mentioned that they offer a discount on breast pumps. Has anyone heard of this? I'm going to call later on, but was just curious.
The BCBS plan I am on offers a 40% discount on breast pumps/supplies through a certain medical supplier. I can tell you that there are limited models to choose from - I don't know if the supplier is North Carolina-specific or not.
I've definitely heard of insurance companies offering discounts on breast pumps and supplies (also for childcare classes). I have United Health and when I called, they told me they don't offer discounts but it's definitely worth calling about.
You'll need your doctor to write a prescription/order for the pump and you can't just take it to BRU or Target, it has to be a medical supply store.

It's true, they can give you a discount. However, it just all depends on what plan you're on. I have Aetna and I don't get any kind of discount but another pregnant woman I know has Aetna and she did get a discount. You'll just have to call your insurance.
It depends on the particular plan you have. Some cover it completely, like mine. I just had to get a Rx from my doctor and take it to a medical supplier and it was paid 100%.
Give them a call. It totally depends on the plan. I have Blue Cross and also United Health. My United Health pays for 100% of the cost of a pump, so I didn't even call BCBS.
It is a tax deduction as well which is new so remember that. I have an HSA account through my employer and you can use those pre-tax dollars if you have one of those accounts.
I called my insurance provider yesterday about this. I had heard that they would be required soon to cover pumps and was told at the hospital I will be delivering in the boutique where they sell pumps and accesorries to check into it because some have already begun to cover the costs of rentals. Here are two links to check out on the topic:
I have an national Anthem PPO plan and when I called I was told that they would pay all of the rental fee or purchase price of that unit which ever was less. I needed more explaination so she went on to tell me that they base the 'whichever is less" on the charge if I were to rent for 10 months. So if the unit is valued at $1,500 to buy it and the rental fee is $50 I would have to rent. But they will pay for the rental fee! Nice. Call you insurance provider (have your card ready, they will want your plan info) and check into this BEFORE you buy a pump.
I have BCBS HMO Blue in MA and with my plan they cover up to $750 a year in medical supplies. A breast pump qualifies as a medical supply so I will need to get a prescription and pick it up at a medical supply store that is affliated with BCBS. The pumps are around $300.
Just give them a call - I might suggest that you call and talk to a few different people. I have Aetna and the first time I called the lady said yes your insurance will cover 80% of the cost of an electric pump! You can imagine how excited I was because they are so expensive. She said to go through my hospital. Well my hospital had no clue what I was talking about so I called Aetna back. The second lady I got said she has never heard of this and that breast pumps are not covered. So I called a third time and the third lady was very helpful and did some research for me and found that starting August 1st pumps would be covered.
So just be sure you are getting the right information when you call!
