When to transition to sippy cup?

Hey there!  LO had his 6 month appointment last night and the pedi recommended putting some water in a sippy cup just to get him used to using one so that when the time comes it will be an easier transition?  Has anyone else tried this yet and at what age?  TIA!

Re: When to transition to sippy cup?

  • We started him shortly after our 6 mo. appt. because our Dr. said to offer water also to help him poop more easily, and when we tried to put water in a bottle he acted like we were trying to poison him LOL. I bought the Nuk soft spout learner one, he seems to like it, and it won't spill, they have to suck it, so I think it feels similar to a bottle in that way. He loves to just lay on the floor and hold the handles and drink like a big boy! :)

  • We had an Avent one that came with a starter set (she didn't like the bottles). Anyway she loves the sippy cup with water. Helps with teething since its a soft tip one. I started it about a month ago.

  • My pedi recommended not even to use a sippy cup - ever. And just wait until LO reached the age 9-12 mo for handling cups and to just skip sippy cups.

Interesting, don't want to hijack your thread OP, but what did your pedi say was the reason not to give a sippy?

No worries!  I am actually very interested in hearing that answer as well.

This. Something about speech development. But he said to use straw cups instead of sippy cups. DS uses a Playtex straw cup called Lil Gripster or Lil Gripper. It didn't take long for him to pick up on it, and this one lets you squeeze the liquid up into the straw so they catch on.

  • I just put some water in a small cup and let her drink from it and it worked. Haven't tried a sippy cup yet although I have one.
