Which job would you choose? (clicky)

Ok, so I haven't even interviewed for the other job yet, but I need to start weighing my options. DD is almost 15 months, but at some point, I'm going to need to adjust my schedule around preschool, kindergarten, first grade, etc. So here are a few details:

 Current Job:

  1. 30 mile commute--it's usually about 40-60 minutes in the car. Longer in bad weather. I'm currently working 33 hours so that I can spend more time at home with DD.
  2. I really enjoy the people I work with.
  3. Great benefits--particularly my PTO. I earn over 200 hours/year working 33 hours.
  4. Large staff (40ish in the division, 4 in my dept), so there are lots of educational opportunities and people to bounce ideas off of.

Alternate job:

  1. 5 mile commute--could be more flexible since it's so close.
  2. Lots more money. (I don't have the numbers yet, but it's usually about a $12/hr increase over what my current setting pays.) Theoretically, I could even work more hours and have the same amount of time with DD; or, I could work fewer hours and still make more $ than I'm making now.
  3. Small staff--about 7 in the division. I would be the only one in my department, so if I have a complicated patient I don't really have any one to go to.
  4. Benefits aren't as good. I'd get about 1/2 the PTO for the same number of hours.

  • I find a long commute exhausting, especially after years of doing it. It feels like dead time to me when I'm not productive. And that pay increase is awesome. Good luck!

  • I said #2 because of the commute, and the higher pay.  Even though you won't have your PTO acrue like it does now, you'll be able to afford a day without pay if you need to, because of the pay increase.

I picked number 2. Shorter commute plus higher pay definitely looks like the better option.  Are there changes to any other benefits besides the PTO?  If so that would be a factor in my decision.

I don't carry the benefits, so even the fact that they aren't very good isn't so bad. My main concern is that I won't like the job nearly as much. It's a different patient population--more long term rather than the more acute populations I'm working with now. There would also be a lot of limitations on the scope of my practice since the other facility doesn't have access to a main hospital. Also, being the ENTIRE department worries me a little. Now, I work with a couple people who have a lot more experience than I do and are great clinical resources. I'm also concerned that the smaller facility wouldn't have the same amount of opportunities for advancement that that working for a major hospital group does.

  • I voted job #2 because even though you have a shorter work week, you have to add back close to 2 hours of commuting time a day, which is 10 hours a week that you could be working instead of driving.  I also like that you would be much closer to home and the kids.  Plus the pay increase would be totally worth it.  It sounds like you'd still have flexibility and would only be giving up some PTO.
