XP: Babywearing mamas?

Originally posted to The Eco-Friendly Family, because I somehow did not see this board! Clearly I will have to start lurking.

If there any babywearing mamas about, I was curious, do I actually need a stroller if I intend to have baby in a carrier when we're out and about? My thanks in advance for the advice!

Re: XP: Babywearing mamas?

  • Get an infant seat and a snap n go for the tiny baby stage. Don't buy a big fancy stroller until later, when you will know if it has any value to you.

The seat and snap n go was great for when he fell asleep in the car, which for my baby was very frequently.

  • Loading the player...
  • We use our stroller very rarely, but it does come in handy in certain situations. I'm glad we didn't spend a lot of money on the stroller we originally wanted.

We don't have a snap n go, but PP's suggestion sounds like a good idea.

  • I love wearing DD but she doesn't always love being worn (usually but not always), in these times the stroller is a god send...also we are very active so we got a jogging stroller so that when she is old enough I can jog with her.  My other thought is that as she gets heavier my BW sessions may or may not need to be shorter in duration....we will see.  IDK, I wouldn't go without a stroller but that s me
  • We love wearing DD and do so often, but we love our BOB too. Often we will start out wearing her, but if she needs to eat (we bottle feed) or needs to be changed we often will put her in the stroller afterwards for a bit. I don't like to eat or drink hot coffee/tea while I am wearing her so again stroller. The stroller also gives us our own mobile changing station so we don't have to use the nasty public ones and it gives us a place to put all her stuff even if we are wearing her.

  • I greatly regret our stroller purchase.

I only used the Snap n' Go, and now I use my jogging stroller that I got for half the price on CL.  I greatly GREATLY regret my stroller purchase.  Ugh.

  • We got a travel stroller system and I hated it.  We won't use it again.  However, DD was born in July and these babies will born in late July/early Aug.  It's really hot then and not all babies will tolerate being worn in the heat.  So I'm glad we had the stroller so I could recline the seat and lay DD in it.  We will have a double stroller this time that will allow the babies to be in it absent bucket seats.  In the end I think a snap and go is a decent compromise unless you think you also want a full feature stroller with a full recline feature - if you do - then I'd just buy that now.  Which I know goes against most advice to wait on the full feature stroller until the baby is older.  Just my 2 cents.

  • Thanks so much for all of the thoughts, ladies... I was considering registering for a travel system, but the more I think about the situations where one would use a stroller I am thinking I'd rather wear baby, instead (like walks in the park, shopping, etc.). But I'm a FTM and I really have no idea what my needs are going to be, or baby's.

  • Just remember that stores will be there when you have the baby! If you change your mind, you can go buy what you want when you need it.

I really loved the snap n go for the price (they're easy to find used, too), the size (fits in the trunk easily), and the simplicity. We do have a Chicco Liteway in the trunk now, but I wear him if we're going to be <30 min somewhere, or he loves the shopping carts. He doesn't really like the stroller much - it's too far from me. Still, it's handy for places where I need to tie him down, like when I have a chiro appointment. She's fine with me bringing him, but I need a place to put him.

  • FTM here too so I don't have experience but I thought I'd just wear my baby all the time too, then I realized that there are going to be times when you'll need to put the baby down when you're out. If you're shopping and trying on clothes or if you have a doctors appointment you probably aren't going to want to put the baby on the floor. Or if you're out to eat you might be better off without the baby in the way of getting potentially hot food spilled on her.

Those are exactly the times I've used a stroller. Personally, I decided I wasn't interested in spending money on a stroller, so I was lucky that friends lent us a snap-and-go for tiny baby days and then we got an umbrella stroller off freecycle for now. We use a stroller about once per week and for those few situations that it is better than babywearing, I am glad to have it. (Though I am also glad I didn't spend any money on it.)

This is really good to know. The Snap 'n Go seems like the way to go, though I'll have to amend my plan to get a convertible car seat. Thanks again SO much for helping me make an educated decision about this!

  • If you know anyone with a 1 year old (or older) they might lend you the infant seat. They've got a limited shelf life, so people tend to be generous. It was so much easier for us to have an infant seat.

Some babies hate them and end up happier in a convertible, but I really think that's a small minority of (loud) babies.

  • I have an umbrella stroller that I used for my son when he was a little older and heavier, it was good in the summer when we both needed a break.
