This day has just been sucky. N had to have a blood draw for hematocrit, hemoglobin and a lead screen. I took him to our normal lab and they could do it but it would be an arm draw (that's what I was expecting) but said if we went somewhere else, they could do it with a finger prick. Great! I like that idea much better. So I took him to the other lab and he did great, barely made a sound. But his finger was bleeding quite a bit so they put a bandaid on it and told me to wait 15 or so minutes until it stopped bleeding and I could take the bandaid off so he didn't eat it in his car seat.
So we went to the cafe and I got us some lunch. As I was buckling N into his high chair he started wailing. I figured he just didn't want to be there so I told him it's ok and sat down and tried to offer him some food. He wouldn't stop crying, so after a minute I got him out. When I unbuckled him, I saw that I had pinched his belly in the strap!!
I felt horrible! Poor little thing had to wait there in pain for me to clue in!
Then we got home and he was playing in the living room. He pulled some paperwork out of the diaper bag and before I could get it off of him he ate the corner of it. The corner with the STAPLE in it!!! OMG, I let my baby eat a staple!! I'm terrified it's going to cut his poor little insides
The pedi said just watch him and if he seems off or is vomiting or anything, take him to the ER. I just cannot believe I let that happen. I'm so on edge waiting for a poo diaper so I can see that it came out and didn't cause any damage. This sucks.
I debated even posting about the staple. I feel like someone should call CPS on me ![]()
Re: Ugh, I feel so terrible!
Awww don't blame yourself...they are soooo fast it's not even funny! I hope you get a poop with a staple in it soon! I know I would be totally on edge too, who wouldn't? But, people swallow lots of weird stuff and are fine.
(((hugs)))
Oh, don't beat yourself up!! It does sound like a terrible day, but you're feeling worse than he is for sure! These babies are pretty hardy
This from the mom whose baby rolled off the changing table on Sunday O_O I hate to say it, but this is probably not the worst that will happen to our helpless kids. Pour yourself a glass of wine and tell yourself tomorrow will be better!!
I'm sure N will be fine!!
I'm so sorry! I hope it passes through without any issues. I would think the fact that it was a used staple would mean it's less likely to scratch him on the way out. Hopefully there is still some paper attached to it which should protect him a little bit too.
aww no worries mama! I'm surprised my daughter hasn't already swallowed something like that, they can get that stuff in their mouths so fast!! I'm sure it will just move right through him and he'll never know the difference.
If it makes you feel better, we swaddled Alexis so tight that it pinched her arm and left a mark once she as a few months old. She was up all night crying and we never thought to unswaddle her, just kept feeding/rocking/even gave her tylenol bc we couldnt figure out what was wrong with her!
She seems to have forgiven us
Thanks - that does help - glad he was ok! I know there's like a 99% chance it'll be fine but I just keep envisioning that other 1%.
Oh Gym. I am sorry about yours and N's day
It seems like the staple was closed and not open right? I bet it passes just fine.
No one is calling CPS on you! Things happen. Hugs.

oh and if it makes you feel any better....
I let DD sit on my bedroom floor all the time. I lifted her up the other day and layed her on my chest. She threw up a little....there was a hairball in it...yes, she had eaten Pomeranian fluff from the carpet and I didn't even know it..

This happened to Carter, too. I'm assuming it was from one of our house plants. I'm also fairly certain C has had dog food ( probably more than once). He also fell into the unbabyproofed corner of the coffee table trying to walk last week. I figure as moms of boys, I better get used to pedi calls and ER visits.
No worries, mama. I think we will hold off on the CPS call.
Yeah, it would have been closed. I actually stapled a piece of paper together and pulled it out with my teeth to see if it might have opened when he did that and I don't think it would have.
Thanks again ladies! Glad to know mine is not the only one swallowing random stuff!! Not that I want them to swallow random stuff, but....well, you know what I mean
Things happen. Babies are quick! If it makes you feel better, we were painting a room in our house and my daughter was tooling around in her walker. I went to the bathroom (my dad and brother were out there painting) and I came back to shouts. Apparently, my dad had turned his back on her for a minute and she scooted over, got the lid from the paint off the window ledge where my brother had just set it, and took a bite out of the paint.
We were all freaking out, but Poison Control said it was NBD because it was indoor latex paint.
But it was a very terrifying couple minutes!
She's come close to eating dust balls (more than once), and she has pooped out grass, so I guess she ate that at some point. (I'm thinking she picked it up from our carpet. It was a tiny bit.)
And probably a handful of other things I can't remember. The kid is crazy quick.
Point is, try not to beat yourself up.
Aw, baby's first hairball!
I can't figure out why the only finger food my LO will eat is puffs - he just rejects all sorts of other things - but he tries to eat leaves off the floor, and the other day he chewed up a whole Post-it. He didn't swallow it, I found it balled up in his mouth like 10 minutes after I'd last seen it in his hand.
Hope the staple comes out soon and safely!
1-- he's going to be fine!! You are an awesome mama
2-- your staple experiment made me giggle-- I would have done the same thing
