Rosacea or dermatitis, safe products/home remedies?

Hi ladies. Pre-pregnancy, I had some rosacea that was well controlled with Oracea (doxycycline). Topicals like Metrogel and Finacea never worked for me. My derm said Finacea was the only prescription treatment safe for pregnancy (schedule B).

In the past several weeks, my face has gotten 10 times worse. I now have acne rosacea and dermatitis on my nose and cheeks. I know it's gross, but my face is bright red, scabby and feels like it's constantly burning. It's so embarassing- I don't leave the house unless I absolutely have to. Make-up only makes it look scabbier.

Does anyone have any non-prescription recommendations? I am desperate!!!

  • I've always had minor Rosacea and use Dr. Weils Mega Muhsroom skin relief serum from Origins. I'm not sure if that'd be strong enough for you though. If you live near one, perhaps you can go in and request a sample. It's very expensive, so I wouldn't suggest purchasing it unless it really works for you. My mom uses it too and it works better than her rosacea medication did. GL
Sept 2013 started TTC#2 (never got PP period so hoping for the first egg to drop)
Jan 2014 - diagnosed POF (Premature Ovarian Failure) and told pregnancy not possible without egg donor because my ovaries would never function again with my hormone levels (FSH 136, LH 98.6, AMH <.03, estradiol 0, HCG 7) - using acupuncture, chiropractic care and TCM herbs / supplements
March 11, 2014 ovulated despite every doctors prognosis!!!
Oct 2014 hormones (FSH 48, Estradiol 89, HCG 1) not good, but heckuva lot better!

  • No experience with rosacea, but I have dermatitis on my scalp and was terrified of not being able to use my prescription shampoo (it is class C) for months.  I read a lot about using tea tree oil topically.  Personally I didn't really think it did too much, but you may want to see if that would be something that would work.  I recently read about using apple cider vinegar for dermatitis and tried that with more success.  I did not dilute it at all.  Just put it on waited several minutes and washed it out.  So far it seems to make a positive difference.  They only thing that sucks is the smell.

Go to a health food store and ask around about alternatives.  Good luck.

Thanks! I've been using apple cider vinegar for a while and it does help. I've read about tea tree oil, that's something else to consider.

I think I just have to suck it up for the next 7 months. The worsening of my symptoms seems to be hormonal. Crossing my fingers and hoping it eases up in the second trimester.

PS- I'm sitting here with a homemade mask of colloidal oatmeal (oatmeal ground to a fine powder in the food processor) and raw honey with a bit of distilled water. I put it in the fridge for a little while, slathered it on and it feels great. If you have sensitive skin, this is a great way to soothe it!
