Breastfeeding

XP from Multiples: Any 50-50 FF-BF moms?

I started out with an incredibly low supply. I'm lucky my milk came in at all. Preterm labor, emergency c-section, 8 day hospital stay for me 3 weeks for the boys, I was on pain meds plus medication for hypertension and we had a death in the family. When they came home I did a lot of skin to skin, breast fed as much as possible and eventually started taking fenugreek and drinking mother's milk tea. I'm now able to feed one baby at each feeding with a little left over to spare; the other gets a bottle of formula.

When we came home they started having a lot of gas pains and constipation so we switched their formula and it helped, up until recently. (We switched from Enfacare to Gentlease)

I talked to my labor coach who was also an OB RN about what is causing the gas. We've tried gas relief drops and they seem to help but only minimally. She has me recording the food I eat and tracking the boys' problems with gas to see if there's a correlation between the two, but she doesn't think there is. I personally think it's either from going back and forth with breast milk and formula or the formula. They seem to do better when they breast feed, they're more content, pass gas more easily etc.

So we meet with their pediatrician on Monday for their 2 month check up and I will talk to him about it. I guess my question is did any other moms go through this? Did you figure out what it is? I'm not ready to give up on BF yet after how hard I have worked to build up my supply, but I will if it's what is best. I talked to my labor coach about possibly trying to increase the amount of breast milk they get to see if that helps. I'm sure with more fluids and some time I can increase my supply more I'm just unsure. If their gas would go away by giving them 100% either breast milk or formula, obviously formula is easier but I do believe that breast milk is better for them. If that's the case would you try to EBF?

Like I said I will talk to their pedi about this but I'm a FTM and would really like to hear other moms' experiences. TIA!

  • we had bad gas for quite some time. he now takes zantac due to spitup issues, and i don't know if it's a coincidence or not but the gas has died down dramatically. we have a suspected dairy intolerance (which we're now debating whether or not it's an issue), so we've gone through regular, gentle, soy and now alimentum formula. he's done much better on the soy and alimentum, but we started soy around the same time as the zantac.

i'd try to EBF. i feel your pain on a low supply and i only have 1. it's frustrating. we're sitting here trying to figure out if it's the formula that's giving him issues or if it's me. it's a never ending guessing game. we have yet to figure it out.

what i have done is gone to 50/50 bottles to let my fridge stash build up a bit, done 50/50 for a few days to see how he does then go 100% BM until that stash runs out and compare the two.

    good luck!

  • We bf first, then DS gets a 2 oz bottle of Allimentum. He's very gassy. Sometimes he'll cry for an hour straight while scrunching up his little legs.

I had a breast reduction, so that's the cause of my supply issue. DS gets 1.5 oz from me at a good morning feed (went to LC). As the day goes on, he getsore formula bc my supply dwindles. I would love to EBF, but unfortunately, that's not an option for us.

I would say, if you can EBF, do it. If not, as gassy as it seems to make them, I would continue doing what you're doing. At least they get some breast milk and therefore the benefits of it as well.
