I tried for about a week when we first started solids. She pretty hated it so we moved on.
I only use it now when I feed her a certain fruit puree. I made it and it got a bit too runny. It still tastes fun and I want to use it up so I add the cereal to thicken it.
We use rice cereal to thicken up some of the runnier purees. I think we stopped using it as a stand alone option once we had a good variety to offer, so about a month in?
We still use oatmeal, mainly for breakfast since in my mind it makes the fruits and yogurt a little bit heartier. We'll probably buy another box once this one is gone but forgo the rice once that box is empty.

We don't give cereal by itself, never have. My LO hates the lack of texture in purees so we use it to thicken them up when we feed them to her. In our case we'll stop feeding cereal when we stop giving any purees at all, which will be once she gets better about actually getting table foods in her mouth instead of just playing with it and throwing it on the floor.
My LO takes after me: cereal, a must. While BFing I eat oatmeal twice a day. While beginning solids, LO eats cereal twice a day also. When I stop BFing I suspect I'll be back to once a day. When LO is eating more solids, I suspect she'll eat cereal once a day or not at all (if she's favors many breakfast foods). DH is an oatmeal person also... so it could be genetic for LO two times over...
