S/O birth control.. Copper iud and or implanon question (nbr)

I have to make a decision within a couple of weeks on bcp. I don't want to take a pill everyday and I'm not ready for anything permanent. I had mirena before but I had a rare side effect where the string grew into my cervix. So I was thinking if the copper iud or the implanon. Does anyone have experience with these? ( excuse typos im typing and nursing).

  • I had the copper IUD before I ever got pregnant.  No complaints.  I didn't realize this until afterward, but the copper IUD's strings are soft and mirena's are hard so you may have better luck with this one.  I've also read some studies that show that that heavy bleeding and cramps (most common side effects of the copper one) go away within a few months.

  • I'm seriously considering implanon if I ever get forgetful with the mini pill.  The downside is that my OB did say that there is occasional breakthrough bleeding with it, which can often be treated with estrogen (unfortunately not something I can take).  Otherwise I love the idea of implanon and will probably get one eventually.

I personally wouldn't get an IUD b/c I've seen women come to the OR to have them surgically removed after they migrated out of the uterus, both paragard and mirena.  Given that I've only seen a few dozen and IUDs are very common for birth control, I'm sure it's a very rare side effect.  But it's not one I care to chance.

  • I have the copper IUD (since Aug) and love it. I hate taking BCP and didn't want to deal with it (as I have to take a daily thyroid med already).  It was not comfortable getting put in and I had cramping for a day or two after but other than that no issues. I'm EBF so I haven't had a period yet so I can't tell you how that is.
  • I have Implanon and I love it. I had it put in, in december. I haven't had any problems with it. For about 2-3 weeks after that I bled on and off, but since then I haven't had a period. I'm also EBF and haven't had any supply dip.
  • Thanks you guys. I was leaning more towards the copper b/c I wanted something hormone free. My ob was pushing me a little more towards the implanon. I don't want anymore children but just can't bring myself to do any of the permanent sterilization. Dh was all about a vasectomy when I was pregnant now he's flaking out on me.
