Baby Names

Is this name too similar to SIL's.

My husband's family has a tradition of using the initials KMK for the females in his family. I do not mind this tradition, but there are only a few K names I actually like. The problem is the name we both like, Kylie Marie, is similar to our niece's, Kaylee Marie. Should I just go for a different first name? Middle name? Suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Is this name too similar to SIL's.

  • That is too similar IMO. But, I would look into some other K names. K names tends to be difficult to come up with as it is. I like Kathleen, but most k names are either made up nonsense or misspellings. Check out some baby name sites and see if there are any names that catch your eye.

  • It would be way too close for me.

    My name is Katrina.

  • Those are pretty similar, but I'm guessing with that tradition in the family, there are bound to be repeats.

  • How about Karly (or Karla)?  I prefer it with a C but it's not uncommon to see it spelled with a K.

Just stay away from names that you rarely see spelled with a K.  If you name a kid Karmen or Kassandra people will just assume you're emulating the Kardashians.

Kylie is NMS but far better IMO than Kaylee.  Yes, those names are a lot alike.

  • They are cousins not siblings.  If that's the name you like, use it. If you are worried they are too similar because it will bug you, don't use it. (they are clearly similar, I just don't think it matters)

I have a couple cousins with the same name.  My oldest has the same name as my own cousin and my dad. We've never had any problems. We are a very close family so we do see each other all the time but it hasn't hurt anyone yet.

Which name do you prefer more? The first or second? They are similiar so if you're worried about that, I would just change the name you like less.  What about something like Kylie Mae or Kara Marie?  If you really like Kylie Marie (and DH's family has a tradition of using those initials and you want to honor that), I also don't think there's anything wrong with sticking with the name you like even if its similiar to your niece's.

  • Yes, I think they are too similar.

     How about Kelsey Mae?

  • That's too close, IMO. Wow, that is a tough tradition since most K names are too little girlish or are super trendy or made up/misspelled. I would have a hard time with that...
  • I think they're too similar. If you change the first name OR the middle name, it should be fine. I don't think you need to change both. However, if you want to keep the Marie, then nix Kylie.

  • Way too similar, sorry.

I'm also not a huge fan of K names....The only ones I like are Kate, Keturah, Katrina and Katarina.

I'm not sure if any of those appeal to you....

  • they are too similar for me..  I just don't get why anyone would limit themselves so much when choosing a name- it doesn't seem fair to the babies having such a small pool to pick from!   I could see it more if you were honoring a very special person but just as a general tradition I don't see the point.  Sorry just me!
  • They are very similair, but who cares? I'm curious, though, what are some not-K names you liked? If you really love one of those then screw tradition. :)
