It was e. coli!

Some may have seen me post earlier in the week about the possible UTI DD had. 3 lab tests and a kidney sonogram later, they found e. coli in her system

I'm waiting to hear back from the doctor to figure out what we do to treat it, but it appears that the worst part is over and that the diuretic she's been taking to flush her system is probably what would have been recommended anyway earlier on.

On other family health news, DH still has pneumonia. My parents just arrived to visit today and he's still too sick for any date nights. :( Nonetheless, I am going to try to take advantage of their presence to just get out by myself if I can.

  • Oh shiit, was my first reaction when I saw your post. Poor girl! So glad you have an answer now though and can continue treating it. I hope both DH and A recover quickly!

  • LO has had 2 UTI's and both were from e. coli. And we were/are super persistant about wiping from front to back.

I'm glad you found out what it was, but it makes me wonder why it didn't show up earlier? Hmm... anyway, I hope she has a speedy recovery!

And go out by yourself for sure! Or have your parents take you LO out and snuggle on the couch with your DH. If he isn't contagious anymore! ;)

  • I believe E. coli is a very common cause of UTI.  My husband had a kidney infection recently and it was an E. coli infection. E. coli is naturally occurring in the gut. It's not the same kind of E. coli that people get from eating tainted food.  I hope your daughter feels better soon.

  • Yes....get out by yourself.  You need a break from your family.  Yes....it is OK to feel that way.
  • Sorry your DH is too sick to go out but do take advantage and go out and see friends by yourself. My DD had pneumonia over Christmas, not fun I know (and they wining, lol). I know nothing about e.coli but I hope that it is not bad and that she gets better soon!

She keeps testing negative for a UTI and hasn't had a fever or any other UTI-like symptoms. This whole thing has been so weird. I honestly wonder if the lab had a mix-up or something because this has been going on for over a week and nothing came up until today.

I had dinner with a bunch of doctor friends flying through town this weekend and they theorized about a possible dissolved kidney stone scratching sensitive tissue on the way out and causing the blood in her urine. The more I think about this and wait to talk to the doctor tomorrow (it's nighttime here already), the more it seems to make more sense than e. coli.

Labs who call 20 minutes after the doctor's office closes are no good!

Last year (when DD was 2) we made 2 trips to the ER for a fever that wouldn't break.  At first they diagnosed a UTI, then a UTI Staph-infection (which they later theroized may have actually been yeast caused from antibotics for the original UTI)  Then a series of stool cultures tested postitive not only for Salmonella but a strain of Salmonella that hadn't been documented in the US for nearly ten years.  It was crazy-scary and super frustrating because we kept having to repeat urine cultures everytime we got a positive test result on the off chance that there was accidental contamination....plus we never figured out for sure if about the staph.

DD is now healthy although she still has recurrent mild UTI's which we treat with cranberry extract.  Her Dr. believes she may have a bladder reflux issue which is causing the UTI's and is hopeful she'll grow out of it.

Thanks for sharing your story. This has been crazy-scary and super frustrating for me, too.
