NYC mommies... photographers

Is it just me or are the photographers obnoxiously expensive here!?   I mean, I've paid $100 for a sitting fee in IL... but here, $250+.  I got one guy to give us a free sitting fee.. he sent us 300+ unedited proofs (lots of bad shots... I dont' think there was a single pic that wouldn't need editing)... but I cannot order and then hope the editing turns out okay. I haven't ordered squat. (you get what you pay for, right?)  

Any recs?  

my old photographer recommended lyndsey belle photography... they attended the same workshop recently and she was impressed.  She books up months in advance, so I'd need to decide something soon. I am just having a hard time paying the sitting fees during this time of year.

    I never dealt w/ photogs in NYC, but after living there for 6 yrs, I can say that the only things I found to be cheaper in NYC than the rest of the country were 1) Cab rides, 2) good international food (why Thai food is sceney and expensive where I live I don't know???) and 3) Mani/Pedis and some other spa stuff.

    My only suggestion to you would to see if you could find a photog student or someone just starting their business who might be interested in doing it for less, etc.

    I tried the newbie route and it didn't turn out to be a good move.  So now I'm looking for someone with experience.  Poor DS's 1yr photos suck. Sad  I'm thinking of just taking him to picture people for some shots and then spending the money next spring summer for family portraits. ????
