Pacifier issues - need help please!!!

I need help. What is the best way to wean a 4month old off the pacifier? It wouldn't be a problem if she could keep it in her mouth, or be ok after it fell out while sleeping. I haven't slept more than an hour at a time for 3 weeks now and it's starting to affect my judgement. I'm just walking around in a daze and DD isn't sleeping well either and is super cranky most of the time because of it. We tried cold turkey and she screamed for 4hrs and wouldn't fall asleep, even with rocking. We then tried to let her fall asleep with it, then take it out, she would wake up and scream for it after 2 min. Then we tried letting her fall almost asleep and then taking it out, but again, she would scream for it. I don't understand why she won't just put her hands in her mouth. She has her fingers in her mouth when she's awake all the time! I don't get it and Im going insane. Please help!

Re: Pacifier issues - need help please!!!

  • An option is definitely to start sleep training now. We did Ferber when my son was 3.5 months old. It took one night and he does not need the pacifier to fall asleep and doesn't look for it at night either. He sleeps from 7 to 7. It also only took one night. Just a suggestion because I was starting to go crazy as well. When my son was in my room I used to sleep with my arm over the bed into the rock and play and have my hand keeping the pacifier in his mouth. It does take a toll, but now he's in his crib in his own room and everyone is sleeping wonderfully in this house.

  • How long did your son cry that 1st night? I'm afraid she's not ready for sleep training since she cried 4hrs that night...I've heard that's way more than the normal amount of crying for an infant ready to be sleep trained.

  • Yeah 4 hours is a lot!!! At most, each time he woke up, he cried for no more than a half hour. Maybe you can try the sleep training in another week or two. Was the crying for a straight four hours or when you total all the crying that was done?

  • This is a different direction but what about a Wub a nub?

  • She cried for an hour initially, then I gave her a dream feed a couple of hours into it. Then she woke up 2 hrs after that and all hell broke loose! Cried on and off for over 3hrs until I it was time to get her up. I know she wasn't hungry because of the dream feed, she just wanted to be held with her paci.

I tried that! She pulls it out of her mouth and throws the stuffed toy!

  • i went through this. I sleep trained - no paci around 5 months. Rough few nights. Unfortunately she got sick and we gave it back to her at 6 months. By that point, she could find one of the multiple ones we put in her crib.

No helpful suggestions, but I wanted to say that this made me lol : )

We use the wubanub too, but our LO does not (yet) throw it :) At most sometimes he accidentally pulls it out of his mouth. It's really funny to watch him opening his mouth wide and try and get it back in.

  • This could be helpful to some and horrifying to others, but can you encourage her to suck on her hands? My LO was much better at self-soothing once he found his hands. He doesn't suck on them all the time and he doesn't seem to favor one finger over the others, so I don't think he'll develop a thumb-sucking habit.
