I was wondering if your pediatricians told u to give Vitamin D to your newborn and when to start? They told me to give it to my baby right away after discharge from the hospital ,1 ml a day until 1 year old...They said they recommend it lately to all the babies that are breastfed..
TIA
Re: Vitamin D suplements for breastfed babies
I was told that as well by my pedi at our one week appt. and we were giving DS the drops everyday. However, when he came down with an ear infection we went in for an RSV test and another pedi from the same office told me it wasn't necessary for him, to just take the Vit D myself or just take DS outside for as little as 10 min a day in the sun.
I told my pedi this at his 2 month appt. and she freaked out, told us to start back upon the drops. Why would the other pedi tell us it wasn't needed? Needless to say, we have not started back up. We just take him outside everyday for a walk and I ingest plenty of Vit D to make up for it. I don't know what everyone else does, but I know a lot of other EBF moms who's pedi hasn't said a thing about them.

I have been told by midwife, the pediatrician, the circ doctor and even the pediatric cardiologist that we need to supplement because vit d is not transferred by breastmilk. We use the drops and get him in the sun a few minutes a day. Most Canadians are deficient including me, so I'm happy to supplement.
Our pedi said this too but I haven't gotten them yet. DD was born in March as well and we were never told to give them to her...and she's just fine.
