Vitamin D suplements for breastfed babies

I was wondering if your pediatricians told u to give Vitamin D to your newborn and when to start? They told me to give it to my baby right away after discharge from the hospital ,1 ml a day until 1 year old...They said they recommend it lately to all the babies that are breastfed..

TIA

Re: Vitamin D suplements for breastfed babies

  • I was told that as well by my pedi at our one week appt. and we were giving DS the drops everyday. However, when he came down with an ear infection we went in for an RSV test and another pedi from the same office told me it wasn't necessary for him, to just take the Vit D myself or just take DS outside for as little as 10 min a day in the sun.

I told my pedi this at his 2 month appt. and she freaked out, told us to start back upon the drops. Why would the other pedi tell us it wasn't needed? Needless to say, we have not started back up. We just take him outside everyday for a walk and I ingest plenty of Vit D to make up for it. I don't know what everyone else does, but I know a lot of other EBF moms who's pedi hasn't said a thing about them.

  • My pedi didn't say anything, on kellymom it says that breast milk and sun exsposure should be plenty.  We do our tummy time by the sliding glass door in the sun so hopefully we are good, I am going to ask me pedi on wed though.

  • I asked about the drops at DD's 1 month appointment last week and I was told that she didn't need them and being breastfed was enough.

  • Our pedi recommended them because breast milk has everything babies need, except maybe vitamin d.  I guess the rationale is that most women are vitamin d deficient themselves, so it makes sense it would be lacking in breast milk.  Also, my sister is a pedi and I asked her before about putting E is the sun that shines through the window and she said not to bother because the windows filter out the benefits. Just something to think about...

  • We have been giving Vitamin D drops since day 3, the first appointment with our pediatrician.  DD was born in December and it's cold here - no way is she outside even for 10 minutes a day.  The research on Vitamin D is fairly new and most people are deficient.

  • Nobody mentioned it to me, but I get him a few minutes in the sun whenever I can.  The multivitamin I take also has vitamin D, so I'm assuming some of it gets into the breastmilk for him.  Unless he is suffering from a critical deficiency, he will not be getting drops.

  • DD spits hers out but we started with the d-vi-sol the other day. I have to catch it with a paper towel so it doesn't stain. She is not a fan.

  • I have been told by midwife, the pediatrician, the circ doctor and even the pediatric cardiologist that we need to supplement because vit d is not transferred by breastmilk. We use the drops and get him in the sun a few minutes a day. Most Canadians are deficient including me, so I'm happy to supplement.

  • I supplement with poly-vi-sol (I'm anemic) but not everyday as it was plugging her up. We usually do it once every other day. Our pedi said start at 2 months.

  • My ped told me to start at our 2 week appt. I've heard both sides to this, but I'd rather just give the drops and not stress about her getting that 10+ minutes of sun per day (even though many/most days she does).

  • We didn't give them with DS1 but we are this time around mainly because I was told about the Baby D drops which actually are just 1 drop, not 1 ml. The 1 ml ones were a waste for us because they just got spit out.

  • We were also told by our pedi to give the drops, 1 mL a day. We started after his 2 week appointment. Especially with it being winter when he was born we don't get out much since it has been so cold and cloudy (we live in Michigan). I never asked her when we should stop though so I'll ask at his 4 month appt.

  • For those of you that have LOs that spit out the drops, do they ever get a bottle of BM?  Until I go back to work, DH gives E a bottle before bed, and we just mix the drops in with the bottle.  Our pedi told us this was fine to do, and it eliminates having to worry about E spitting it out.  On the few times we forgot to add to the bottle and we gave separately, it was a lot messier!

Our pedi said this too but I haven't gotten them yet. DD was born in March as well and we were never told to give them to her...and she's just fine.
