Working Moms

S/O Housekeepers...

Those of you who have one, are you at home when they come to clean?  If so, is it awkward?  Do you try to stay away and let them clean or do you talk with them?  I hate when someone just sits around and watches me clean, so I can imagine it would be awkward for them, too.

If the housekeeper comes while you aren't home, how do you trust them in your home?  Did it take a week or two before you left or have you trusted them from day one?

TIA!

Re: S/O Housekeepers...

  • I don't personally have a housekeeper but my mom does. She's had a housekeeper for about 12-15 years now? She generally is at work or tries to run errands during that time. Peggy (the housekeeper) is a talker and sometimes it's easier on my mom's mental well-being if she's out of the house. My mom does trust Peggy, but she came highly recommended from close friends of ours who had known her for years. I don't know/remember if we stayed in the house until my mom became more comfortable with Peggy or if she just always let her do her thing. Personally, I would probably stay around the house for the first week or two, but that's just me.

    Good luck!

  • We found our housekeepers based on recommendation and they also gave us other referrals to call and check, so their trust wasn't really an issue.  However, I did stay for the first 2 times because there was a lot of communication back and forth like, "Oh, where do you keep the extra towels?  How do you run your washing machine?  Where is your trash can out back?"  Stuff that was related to cleaning, but that I didn't include in the basic instructions.  Even then, I didn't hang around them.  I pretty much stayed in our office and they came to me when they had questions.  After that, they pretty much had the routine down so I don't need to be around.
  • Our housekeeper was recommended by neighbors on our street (we're actually the fifth house she cleans), so it was easy to trust her.  If anything was missing, the neighbors would talk, and she would lose business.  But we did meet her in person, interviewed her, and felt comfortable giving her her a key.  I'm not home when she cleans and if for some reason I was off, I would run errands because I agree it's awkward.  My advice is get recommendations from friends/neighbors.  As an aside, we also have a dog walker who also has a key to the house.  The walker is from the same business where the dogs to daycare and boarding if we go out of town.  Same applies, if they weren't trustworthy they would lose business.

  • I've had the same cleaning lady for about 6 years now. Normally I would be present in my home, but not in the same room.  I'd pretty much just let her do her thing w/o watching her.

I'm normally uptight and cautious about people being in my house when I'm not there, .  She has always been reliable and has never done anything to cause distrust.   I recently started leaving the door unlocked for her while I go out and run errands, and it's so convenient!

  • Thanks everyone!  I just moved in October, so I don't really know my neighbors but I will have to ask when I get to know them this summer!

  • Mine comes on Fridays when I'm working from home.  I'm there, but I just stay in my office room and only interact with them when they come to clean that room.  It is kind of awkward when they're dusting or vacuuming around me.  I make small talk with them.  I don't know if they feel awkward or not.

  • we aren't home...we met/interviewed her in person and went over everything before she started and she had my cell phone to call with any questions.

she was recommended by a friend who has been using her for 8 years as a housekeeper/nanny pt...so I trust her.

Ha, ours is named Peggy too and she's a talker! :)

I HATE being home when she's there.  There has been a time or two when I've been sick.  I'll ask her to clean my room first, I'll go up to our office and lay down, then when she's done w/ my room - I'll go back down and close the door and just hole up in there until she's done.

  • My cleaning woman came highly recommended by two friends, so I trusted her right away and felt comfortable leaving her a key.  I will add that she only has the key to the bottom lock (not the dead bolt).  I much prefer her to come while we are at work.  I don't like scurrying around her as she goes from room to room.  Unfortunately, she just told me that she may have to come on Saturdays, and that will likely have us looking for a replacement.  Weekends are time to relax, not hide from the cleaning woman!

  • We have hired a maid service so there are usually 3 women that come at once, and I am never home when they do (they come on a work day). I leave my garage door opener out for them and leave the door unlocked in our garage. They are extremely professional and I did a lot of research on the company we are using before actually getting them to come out and do anything. I never worry about my stuff.
