Success after IF

I think I might be crazy

We just RSVP'd to an out of town wedding (that will require a flight) on 3/31.  That's just over 2 weeks away!  DD is not a super easy baby like DS was, and well DS is almost 3.  Yikes.  It will be interesting I guess.  A lot of DH's family will be at the same hotel but still I can't picture them being super helpful.

I hope I don't regret using up one of my vacations for the year on this wedding, and traveling with such a young baby.  There will be beaches involved, I just hope we can enjoy them.

Re: I think I might be crazy

  • We travelled with the twins at 4/5 weeks for a funeral. Reese was a colicky nightmare, and even with that in mind it still wasn't terrible. Just a lot of logistics needed to be thought through so we had enough clothes, bibs, backup outfits, I had nursing supplies, etc. The kids were actually pretty easy in comparison to all the stuff we had to haul.

GL, I hope you get some extra hands and some beach time.

  • We traveled when Brady was about 2.5 weeks old and the twins were 13 months old. It was rough at moments but we got through it! We too had to travel for a family event. 3.5 hour car right with a baby that we did not know yet had pyloric sten, we thought it was reflux!

  • We flew with DD2 when she was 3 weeks old (and DD1 was 3) so were in a very similar situation as you.  Also like you, DD2 was not an easy baby -- in fact she was tough -- had colic until 4+ months and basically had two modes during that time -- eat & cry (she rarely slept).  So, I was dreading the flight and trip (also to the beach).  Overall, it ended up better than I expected.  I definitely comfort nursed a fair amount on the flight just to try and "buy" her happiness on the plane and in the airport since she was such a cranky baby.  DD1 has flown a lot so is a pretty easy traveler so she was generally good (and she loves the beach so was happy once we got there).

Once we got to our destination, I was shameless in asking for family help with DD2 while she wasn't nursing so I could get a bit of a break and enjoy our time.  Fortunately, there were plenty of volunteers happy to help.  I hope you're able to enjoy a little of a break and some beach time.

  • How far is your flight?  I don't have an older kid and our first trip was when DS was 3 months old.  It was a flight to vegas and he wasn't easy at all at that age.  I nursed him on much of the flight and that really helped.  Just to warn you, I have heard before about parents with two kids having to sit in different rows for safety purposes.  I might have misunderstood that so check it out, especially if you are flying southwest and will be picking your seats.

  • When your kids are lap children, they won't allow two in one row because of the number of air masks in a row I think.  I always had to have an extra person fly with me when I had two under two.  Once Reed turned 2, I could sit with one on my lap and one beside me.

Good luck!  Once you get the logistics figured out you will be fine.  Flight attendants are usually pretty helpful.  If your son will watch a movie, it would help:)

  • Thanks for the advice ladies.  DS will be 3 so he'll have his own seat and we're flying Southwest so we should be able to just take up 1 row.

It's about a 4 hour travel time but there's a stop and layover.  I had really hoped if we made the trip she'd be good at breastfeeding but that hasn't been the case, I think we're going to make our 6th visit to the LC this week to work on tongue thrusting and make a final attempt to get her to latch, if not I'll just continue to pump.

I plan to wear her in the Ergo, she does well in that so hopefully she'll just sleep each leg of the flight and can eat at the beginning and end.

Good luck! I hope it goes well and I know you can do it. Just wanted to add that you should be prepared to remove her from the Ergo a lot (going through security you will have to take the Ergo off, during take off and landing you will have to simply remove her from the Ergo, but you can keep it on around your waist). You may already know that, but it's helpful to just keep that in mind so it doesn't seem as annoying when people are constantly making you take your baby out of the carrier! :)

Thanks, I knew about security but not take off/landing, that sucks.
