Reflux

My DD has reflux, which I'm sure most of you have experience with. In fact, her reflux is really what kept us in the hospital so long because she would spit up and drop her heart rate as a result. She's home on a monitor now. When we were discharged, she was on Erythromycin (sp?) for it, which worked, but then the pediatrician switched her to Zantac after 2 bradies due to reflux at home. She's still on the Zantac twice a day, and I've recently started putting rice cereal in her formula. We're up to 1.5 tsp per oz of formula, which I thought was a lot, but the pediatrician actually recommended we get up to a tablespoon per oz, so I'm trying to work my way there. So far, she hasn't had any bradies with the rice cereal. She doesn't have any "spit ups," but now, about once a day (always at night), she is throwing up, like emptying the contents of her stomach. For those of you with experience, do you think this is due to the cereal? Am I adding too much/not enough cereal? Will she eventually get used to it? I don't want her to vomit like this, but I also don't want her to brady. This reflux issue has me feeling defeated...

Re: Reflux

  • She's always slept on an incline. Right now, she sleeps in a bouncy seat. What is an RnP?

  • I have to second the RnP suggestion.  I asked the question on the board a few months back and I am so glad that I listened to the advice and bought the RnP.  Similac makes a formula with a small amount of rice cereal.  It's named Similac for SpitUp (I guess the marketing folks had a day off) and it's in a green container.  Do you think that might be a better option than regular formula with rice?

  • I also rec. the RNP (LIFESAVER!).

We did rice cereal in the bottle (with cross cut nipples). For some reason I am thinking that it was 1 tea per oz (but I could be wrong). He also went on Allimentum formula.

What REALLY made the difference for us was going to a GI doctor and going on both Prilosec and Zantac.

I suggest going to a GI doc if your LO is spitting up a LOT at night. Pedis are great, but are more cautious about what they prescribe... GI's are specialists who will really focus on the issue and help!
