Talk to me about Mirena..

I just had my 6 wk (actually more like 7wks) post partum check up. And we ARE definally doing birth control I am done having kids for a bit! I would like one more but not for like 2 yrs or so..anyway..

I am thinking of doing Mirena..are there any side effects? I do get terrible hormonal headaches/migranes. Any reason I can't get it ASAP cause I am bfing?  Also anyone have the IUD and then take it out and then have a hard time getting pg again?  In general Pros and Cons

I also have 5 frozen embies to think about?!! hahah

Re: Talk to me about Mirena..

  • I'm getting one.  I've never had one before, but I do put them in at work.

Biggest complaint is the bleeding can be unpredictable, might not have a period at all, might get random bleeding/spotting.  It might help with the HA's, shouldn't make them worse.  Safe for Bf-ing since it is progesterone only.  In my experience most people get pregnant right away (fertiles anyway) w/o issue.

  • I've had my Mirena for a little over a year and have had zero issues.  I have one day of spotting every few months.  The only downside is that I sometimes freak out and think that I'm pregnant.  I keep some dollar HPT on hand in those instances.  Embarrassed

Other than that I haven't had any negative side effects.  We're 95% sure we're done having kids so until we're 100% sure this is the method we're sticking with.

You are wise to do it now if you decide to go for it.  I have heard that some experience a lot of pain when having it inserted.  I had mine put in about 10 weeks PP and I didn't feel a thing!

  • When I was BF'ing my only option was the progestin only BCP's. Before I started TTC I was on an IUD though and I elected to be on Paragard because it is copper and has no hormones. I do really poorly on hormone supplements (just terrible weight gain, complexion problems, I get moody) so I didn't want to be on something with a hormone attached to it.

As far as the IUD contributing to my IF, I don't think that was an issue. I think I was an IF'er on an IUD and I came off and couldn't get pregnant on my own. I got pregnant three times via IVF after the IUD though!

  • I have the Mirena.  I didn't have any issues with having it put in.  I felt uncomfortable and a bit crampy for about 2 days.  I spotted a bit for a couple of weeks.  And I had one very light period.  It's getting close to a year for me having mine too.  I don't get AF ever, but I have spotted (not even spotting like the tiniest tiny amount) a couple of times.

    My only complaints are:

    1.  Without getting a period, I sometimes also freak out that I might be pregnant.  And I am pretty sure I ovulated last month.  I have only felt ovulation pains twice in my life before that...both times I got pregnant.

    2.  I have brutal PMS.  I don't think it's from the IUD.  But the hormone level in Mirena is soooo small that it doesn't mask your PMS like BCP does.
