Pre-School and Daycare

If full-day Kindi, what for preschool year before?

I'm way overthinking this, and I know in the grand scheme of things it probably won't even matter... but registration is on Weds and our preschool fills up FAST so I need to decide ASAP!

DD1 was in preschool 2 mornings a week last year. This year 3 mornings a week.

Kindergarten in our district just got switched to full-day, no option of half-day.

Next year, I'm debating between sending her 2 full days and 1 half day (all of her friends are doing 3 full days), or 4 half days.

WWYD? Or what are you doing if you Kindergarten is full-day? And I guess if your LO isn't already in preschool/daycare all day. Argh, why can't I make decisions and just let it go?? ;)

Re: If full-day Kindi, what for preschool year before?

  • DS is going two days a week next year. My thinking is that he is going to be in school the rest of his time with us and I want to soak up the time together.  I am considering sending him to Kinder at our private pre-school (that is the only grade they offer). That would give him the opportunity to transition to 5 days a week in a place he is familiar without having to go for such a LONG day.  After that he will go to public.  Plus, that gives me another year before I have to put DD in.

  • DD goes 5x a week for half days.  I have been happy with the schedule and I think it works well for her. It seems like a good transition to the all day K. However, this was the only schedule available for preK at our school.

  • DD is started preschool "late" at 4.5 and goes 3 days/3 hrs. She will start full day kindergarten in the fall. Preschools in my area are almost exclusively half-day. The afternoons are devoted to lunch, naps (she doesn't nap) and free play - more like daycare than preschool. I'd rather have her home during that time.

  • 2 mornings (currently) in the 2's class, then they'll do 3 mornings in the 3's class and 5 mornings in the 4's class before moving to full-day kindy.

  • In your situation, I would do the 3 or 4 full days.  My kids have been in daycare full time since they are infants and when they reach around 2 1/2, it becomes a preschool program based in the daycare.  For the year before kindergarten, my kids go to a full time PreK program (older DD is there now and little one starts in the fall) that is based at the elementary school and run through the districts Early Childhood Programs.  It is an amazing program that gives a great blend of free play time and getting them ready for kindergarten.  It uses the Reggio philsophy (see a post below about it).  I love it and so does my older DD and the little one can't wait to start.  And I love that it is at the school - out of the 30 kids in the 2 classes this year, about 80% will be in kindergarten in the fall so my DD will already know a ton of the kids plus she already knows her way around the school so it makes the transisition so much easier.

  • Kinder in our district is "full day" but that is only 8-1:30, so not exactly a fullday. DS will do pre-k the year before and it is 4 days a week from 8:30-12.
  • Thanks for the responses everyone!

I just realized I never updated w/ what we decided on....well, I spoke to our preschool director and they're making some changes, based on what the parents want. Because of the district switch to full day K, a lot of parents are requesting full-day preK. Until now, they've had 1 full-day preK class and 1 1/2 day preK class. Now they're thinking about switching the 1/2 day class to optional 1/2 day or full day...so until they see their #s and who wants what as far as scheduling, it's still up in the air.

So, we're registered for first choice being 2 full days (MW) and one half-day on Friday. Or if that's not possible, 2nd choice being 4 half days.
