Very newly pregnant and running

This is my first official post to this board as I have just learned that I am pregnant.  I know you arent supposed to share this info yet, but I figure, what the heck with strangers?  Anyways, I have been a runner for about 5 years and have just completed my first marathon at the end of January.  Literally a week after the marathon, I became pregnant.  Obviously, training for the marathon, I was in fairly decent shape and running was fun for me.  However, I took about two weeks off from any strenuous exercise (I had some major knee and back pain).  I have tried my darndest to get back to running, and I am not kidding, running even 3 miles has been extremely difficult.  I feel tired and heavy and I get short of breath so easily.  I'm not sure if this is normal just because I took time off or if it is pregnancy related.  Should I be pushing myself, of should I take it easy.  I see my doctor next week, but was hoping to get some personal experience stories as well.  Oh and another thing, I have already gone from a size 4 to a size 8.  Perhaps its from the pregnancy already?!  Weeeeird!

Re: Very newly pregnant and running

  • I found out I was 7 weeks pregnant 5 days after running the Detroit Marathon last October and it was only 3 weeks after running a 50K. I was tired and running was hard through the first trimester but once I got beyond that, my energy levels came back and running was enjoyable again. I've been averaging about 30-35 (sometimes close to 40) miles per week through out my pregnancy. I feel great, although my pace has slowed tremendously.

Just keep it up and I am sure it will start to get enjoyable again for you too.

  • I found out I was pregnant the day I had a 10 mile race. Before I found out I had a feeling something was up because my speed work had gone to crap.

For me it really depended on the day. I had some good days and bad days with running. I was so glad I pushed through and kept it up as long as I could. (I had to stop at 21 weeks per Dr.'s orders)

  • I am a triathlete (raced through Ironman distance), marathoner and ultramarathoner (50 mile trail race).  I run pretty much every day.  All I have to say, it was the worst during my first trimester.  I felt sluggish, slow, fat, heartrate through the roof, etc.  I just plugged along.  It got a lot better once second tri started and I was able to run until 36 weeks, when it just became too uncomfortable for me.  I then switched to more swimming and cycling.

During first tri there are so many big changes going on with your body, that it takes some time to regulate to the hormones.  Just keep going, but listen to your body.

  • I ran a marathon at 8 weeks, but about a week after that marathon I definitely got much more tired.  I took a few a couple of weeks off from longer runs but then started back up with training for my next marathon.  Now that I"m in my 2nd tri I feel much better, but I am also MUCH slower.  I think part of that tired feeling is also just acclimating to your new pace.... well along with general 1st trimester lack of energy.

  • Well this is encouraging!  I guess I'll just have to accept the weight gain and take it easy for the time being.  I'm assuming this will get easier in the coming weeks!  Thanks everyone for the info.  I don't know why I didn't think this would be so hard.  I'm debating pulling out of the half marathon I'm signed up for in May :(  Maybe I can walk it!

  • I'd still try it you are feeling good and your doctor is okay with it.  It was really only a couple weeks during my 1st tri when I really felt like crap.  Slowly I started getting more energy.  Now that I'm in my 2nd tri I am glad I stuck to training for the marathon next month.  I'm feeling great on my longer runs, its just accepting my new speed.... takes me longer and I take more walking breaks, but I get the miles done and it keeps me going.

  • check with your doc for sure..but I would say listen to your body and dont "push pass the pain" like you might before being pregnant what ever your body is telling you follow it...if you could run 10 miles no problem then do it but if at three your crazy tired..try running just 2 miles..
  • If you don't feel comfortable I wouldn't push yourself.

  • I'm not going to push myself, but im not going to give in yet.  i think im mostly frustrated because i am suddenly unable to do things that were so simple before...plus i look fat/pregnant already which is hard to deal with since no one knows im pregnant.  ok ok ok, im over it. thanks one and all
