Two Under 2

XP: Tandem Nursing

I just posted this in Breastfeeding but feel that a lot of moms there are first time moms.  Or just feeding one ;-)

XP:   At first I had NO interest in tandem nursing, but my 15 mo old is no where close to weaning yet.  I know I still have many months left, and I would love to wean him before the new baby come along, but I am starting to be more open to Tandem Nursing.  He is actually only nursing at bedtime, once at night and first thing in the AM.

Anybody else out there that is nursing two??  Would love to hear your experiences!

  • I was at the position where you were at.  I have heard a lot of wonderful things about Tandem Nursing.  My DD recently self weaned because my supply took a drastic dropped and changed to colostrum recently.  I'm not sure if she'll want to nurse again once the baby comes but we'll see what happens.  I have been recommended the book Adventures in Tandem Nursing.

  • I can let you know in a few weeks :) There were a few times throughout this pregnancy I really thought DS was going to wean himself, but all of the sudden the evil eye teeth started coming in and he's tried picking up the nursing- I'm keeping it to nap and bedtime for now just because I can't stand dry nursing and I don't have much milk for him.

I do expect him to want to nurse a lot more when he sees the baby nursing, and that's fine- still haven't figured out what limits, if any, I'm going to set. I think if I don't make it into a big deal he'll get over it pretty quick and go back to being too busy during the day.

  • mine are 30m and 12m and still tandem nursing with baby#3 on the way! i find tandem nursing very irritating at times but overall i am so happy i did. i feel that my kids are so close because of it. i tell my husband all the time that i think my daughter(12m) bonded more with her brother through tandem nursing than me...lol.

  • I'm currently tandem nursing my 21 month old and almost 3 month old.  I also recommend reading Adventures in Tandem Nursing.  Even if you ultimately decide to wean before #2 arrives, it's a great read.

DD1 only nurses first thing in the morning and at bedtime.  When I first brought DD2 home DD1 wanted to nurse when ever DD2 nursed but I set my boundaries.  If she was really persistent I'd give in and let her nurse but more often then not she was okay with me telling her it will be her turn after she takes a bath (part of our bedtime routine).  I found that she wasn't really jealous of DD2 nursing, she just wanted to nurse with her.

DD1 will now tell me that DD2 needs milk when she's crying / fussy.  :)

I must say, tandem nursing was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be.  In fact, I really enjoy it.

  • I love tandem nursing. It has made our transition much easier I think. At first my son did nurse a lot and he's still nursing more than he was before she was born (once/day). However, I was working before she was born and now I'm home so it's available more. He is at a point where if I say no he listens unless he's really super tired. I also recommend that book, and recommend tandem nursing if you feel like it might be right for your family too.

  • I'm nursing DD once a day (when she wakes up in the morning) and that's it right now.  My milk is kind of half and half (milk/colostrum) from what I can tell right now.  My supply dropped a couple of times so far but I don't see her weaning completely anytime nor do I feel like I'll dry up completely (I still get very full during the night).  I plan on tandem nursing if DD doesn't self-wean before DD2 gets here in a couple of months.  Sorry I don't have personal experience to share yet but I wanted to let you know you're not alone : )
