UTI or baby growing?

I have an increased sensation to pee and almost a stretching or feeling that i need to stretch my lower abdomen. I am 34 weeks and although a home UTI test was negative I am just wondering if this added pressure is related to me growing. Any thoughts?

Re: UTI or baby growing?

  • I have felt this feeling for a long time. I think it depends where baby is....it's uncomfortable, I have the feeling I need to go almost every time I stand up. I did try to do some kegel exercises which seemed to help but could be coincidental. My urine culture was negative when I got checked.

    Good luck!

  • I also have pretty regular fetal movement which I think is also a factor. I have never had a UTI before, but kind of wish it was so maybe meds would make me more comfortable. Another 6 weeks of this is going to be tough! I am generally ok when I am sitting, but as soon as I stand up....I feel like I need to rush to the bathroom!
  • It never hurts to bring it up next time you go to the dr and have them do a test. In both of my pregnancies I have had a UTI and my only symptoms were a dull ache in my lower stomach and I was peeing a lot more. Usually when I get them it also hurts to pee, but for some reason when pregnant it doesn't. I would get it checked out just in case IMHO. Even if the at home kit says you don't. I would rather play it safe.

  • had similar issues at 36.5 weeks, had two urine cultures within 3 days both negative. Baby is just very low (+2 station)  and constantly pushing on my bladder. Midwife recommended over the counter AZO or uristat to help desensitize the bladder. This worked miracles! my UTI like symptoms disappeared and I now don't have the urge to go every couple of minutes. Mine was so bad I was afraid to leave the house. I now reduced the medicine to once a day and it is still working great. Maybe ask about it at your next appointment?
  • I am dealing with this right now. The past few days, I have felt this tingling/stinging feeling down below off and on. I have been peeing more frequently, but it doesn't necessarily hurt or sting when I go, but sometimes it feels like "That's all that came out?!" I am very frustrated because at 24 wks I had issues and thought I had a UTI. Aside from literally sitting down to pee every 10 minutes with only a few drops coming out, I had this excruciating pain in my back on one side. Turns out my ureter was blocked and urine wasn't passing from my kidney to my bladder. The absolute most painful experience of my life. Ended up in the hospital for 5 days with hydronephrosis (enlarged kidney).

This time I have none of the pain in my back, so I am not worried about the kidney issue again, but the slight tingling is bothering me. I know I could call the doc, but I am afraid of starting to take an antibiotic in the meantime (until test results come back, because that's what happened last time) and ending up with ANOTHER yeast infection (yep, after 5 days in the hospital last time, a few days later I ended up with a yeast infection - a common reaction to taking antibiotics). Since I am so close to my due date, I really don't feel like getting/treating another yeast infection knowing I could go into labor at any point.

Sorry this turned into a big vent from me... if it's not burning or stinging when you pee, I wouldn't worry about it. Maybe ask at your next appt? (Don't know how often you are going yet)

  • I have been prone to UTIs my entire life, the need to pee frequently is the first sign, but UTIs progress crazy fast (like you were symptom free at noon and in unbelievable pain by 5pm). The main difference I would say between baby pressure and UTI is the pain at the end of trying to pee, it will feel like your privates are on fire. Plus you sometimes progress to peeing blood. If this is an ongoing pressure and recurrent need to pee alone with no sharp pain, it is probably baby. If you get rapidly worse with any pain let your doc know immediately.
  • If any of you ladies ever question the possibility of you having an UTI - contact your dr. ASAP

I had one that abruptly turned into a Kidney Infection & had to be hospitalized for 48 hours. Don't let that happen to you, it's painful & scary. Also recently learned a kidney infection can quickly turn into sepsis, which is potentially fatal & pregnant women are at risk.

So be aware ladies, only say cause I care
