My very Italian grandmother told me to use whiskey for teething. She swears by it, but you have to use it right. See, you don't put it on the baby at all. You drink it & it works wonders.

I posted this poll to see if any of the fellow bumpies has done this or not. My friend gives her 5 month old LO whiskey in his bottle and tells me about it. I have no idea what to say to her because I don't condone it but I am not about to tell her how to parent. She gave up custody of her first LO at 9 months due to depression and suicidal tendencies...... so it is a touchy situation. Any advice??

I personally would feel the need to report that to CPS. How much whiskey is it and how often? Why can't she just give teething tablets (they work wonders in my daughters case and from what I've seen in other LOs). Giving your child alcohol... that shouldn't be a solution to any problem what so ever. That's child abuse in my opinion.

whiskey in the bottle! If I were you. I would tell your friend this is unacceptable, and show her proper methods of dealing with a teething baby. I would call CPS as well to make sure professionals were aware. Just thinking about this is pissing me off. If you want I will call your friend for you and have a talk about what the is up with dosing a baby with liquer.
I ran out of orajel, had given my daughter tylenol but it wasn't helping - she was in agony. So in desperation, I put some scotch on a q-tip and ran it along my daughters gums - maybe 10 drops on her gums in total. It did help a little and held her over until the tylenol kicked in. I highly doubt i would use it again, but I don't think it warrants being called child abuse in my situation. Now if you were giving them enough to drink, well thats a different matter.
If the house ain't burned down and the baby's fed it was a successful day.
I swabbed her gums once--I just put a drop or two of bourbon on my finger and ran it over her gums. It didn't seem to have any effect on her pain, so I never tried it again. I don't think swabbing is a big deal at all. Whiskey in the bottle is another story.

I've never tried it, but this is what I was suspecting--that it wouldn't have much of an effect at all.
I haven't, since C's teething hasn't been so bad and we use oracle the couple of times it was an issue. I got brandy on my gums or just a teaspoon mixed with juice. I wouldn't judge a mom who did use it though depending on how much and how often.

There's still a big difference between a few drops on a Q-Tip or a finger and any amount in a bottle. If you're POURING it into a bottle, it's too much for a baby. I try not to be Judgey Mcjudgerson but alcohol in a bottle? Come on. OP needs to SPEAK UP to her friend and offer to help her out. I'm sure you could find a nice way to go about it. ESPECIALLY given that this same person already lost custody of one child. If CPS were to get involved because someone other than OP calls there's a very real possibility this child could be taken too given her previous history. Wouldn't you rather talk to her, OP, than have someone else call CPS because you sat back and did nothing?
You could even say something like "we thought about trying whiskey too, I think that's a popular old wives tale, but our pediatrician recommended against it and said to try tylenolm orajel, or teething tablets which are proven to be super effective and safe"
You could make her a "teething first aid kit" and take it to her as a gift which she might appreciate too. Include some teethers you can freeze, a rasberry, teething tablets, orajel, and tylenol. Tell her "this is all stuff that worked for me, I know you've had a really rough time with ___'s teething and just wanted to bring you a little something to cheer you up and help you out"
I completely agree. But 3 drops on a q-tip and 3 drops in a bottle of milk are the same. It didn't sound like the OP's friend was giving her a shot of whiskey before bed ((to me, anyways), but that's the route that some PP's were going like she was getting her drunk.
Well the OP didn't clarify how much she is giving her in the bottle. For all we know it could be 5 oz or it could be 5 drops. From her saying that she's pouring it in a bottle makes me think it's more than a few drops. Either way, there are better ways to handle teething. We don't live in 1940 anymore.
If it's a few drops, I would say to educate her on dealing with teething better. If it's more, they yes, I would call CPS.
We swabbed on C's gums a few times when he was 4-6mos old. He screamed with Orajel, cold washcloths and teethers didn't do a thing; it was the one thing that gave him a bit of relief, and I think we did it less than 5 times total. We had a jigger bottle of JD and you seriously can't tell any was used. Once he was old enough for ibuprofen, that became our go-to for teething and we haven't looked back. (looks over shoulder for aruiz's condemnation for both alcohol and meds)

I did this once when we were out of tylenol. It seemed to work for him, but it didn't last very long at all, so I don't think I'd do it again. But I don't think swabbing with it is a big deal. Putting it in a bottle or cup (with or without other liquids) just seems really weird to me, and I would be worried if I knew someone who did it. I would definitely try to talk to them about it.
A woman's life is nine parts mess to one part magic, you'll learn that soon enough...and the parts that look like magic turn out to be the messiest of all.
OMG about the Orajel. I'll reiterate what I said below. The orajel naturals does NOT have benzocaine in it and is safe to use. As far as Hyland's is concerned, make up your own mind.
I was talking about Orajel with benzocaine. I would not give LO Orajel with benzocaine.
Also, the link you posted re: recalled Hyland teething tablets was from 2010. They have since changed their formula and there is a smaller amount of belladonna in them.

Holy Moly! I lost internet fr a few days and I couldn't check back in! To clarify if anyone is still keeping tabs on this post...... My friend told me that she put a teaspoon of whiskey in an 8 oz bottle. I have since taken action. I basically did just what is bolded above. My friend told me that she has tried and will try harder in the future before giving alcohol. I guess for starters, she is going to try alternate methods of controlling teething pain.
I can only hope that she will take the advice I can give her. I also told her about freezing a wet wash cloth for him to chew on too.
Re: Whiskey, a remedy for teething?? Poll inside
no frickin way
I gave dd as much pain killer medicine for kids as she needed
but I would never give her a drop of alcohol - its been proven even a small amount can damage a young child
they may have done that in the old days, but we know better now
Lol! I like your grandma

My DH kept saying we should put wine on DS' gums when he was teething because that was the only alcohol in the house. lol
We stuck to Tylenol and motrin and I drank the wine.

Edited to fix a vocab error.
