Baby Blues Suck (venting)

Baby Blues suck...and why doesn't anyone really warn or talk about it???

My son is only 5 days old, but they have set in, and it all seems overwhelming.  I have the easiest baby ever and yet, feel completely anxious/panicy half the day.  I have this nauseating feeling and don't want to eat.

Today, my husband watched our sleeping baby for 2 hours so I could take a nap & I tried to eat consistent meals that had a nourishing value (i.e. not cookies for lunch), and we took a short walk through the neighborhood.  I had far less "moments" and felt overall better today...so maybe that's helpful. But regardless, its the worst feeling ever, and again, just sucks.

  • They are very tough, I felt the same way when my son was born but they do get better! Don't worry you'll begin to feel more confident every day...one step at a time!

  • Oh yea do they suck!  I think the sleep and real rest is the consistent thing for helping get over them quicker...  Remember though, you NEED to have those consistent naps and eating over the next few months to really start to feel like yourself again instead of just going through the motions...

  • I had the baby blues extremely bad with my first baby and I wouldn't wish those baby blues on my worst enemy. Fortunately, though, I can tell you from experience that these feelings do not last too long. Within a few weeks you should feel much better and back to your normal self soon. :)

  • :) It gets SO much better!

For me, the first 2.5 weeks were the hardest. I cried at everything. Nights were by far the absolute worse. My midwife warned me that about 3 am is the loneliest time of all, and she was so right. I remember telling myself that if I could just get to 7 am I could call my mom, who I would cry and cry and cry to.

By week three I felt way, way better. I'm now in week four and am just so in love with my LO. Is it easy? Absolutely not, but I feel like I can handle it now. I probably only cry every few days now- and it's generally at things like how big he's getting, etc. (I never thought I'd be THAT person...).

    Things that helped me:

    - Joining a support group to go to once a week with other moms of newborns. I mainly just observed; watching all the moms were super comforting.

    - Coming up with a plan for nights. I ended up having my husband bring a tv into our bedroom (we didn't have one there) so we could stream Netflix. That way I wouldn't just be sitting in the dark with a baby screaming for hours and hours. As so as we were awakened, my husband would cue it all up.

    - Reading blogs/message boards/etc online from people going through the same things.

    - Get dressed as early in the day as you can. If possible, take a shower, or at least brush your teeth.

    - Try to get in a walk once a day, even if it's just to the end of the block.

Good luck! I'll send good thoughts your way. Of course, if you don't start feeling better in a few weeks, be sure to talk to your doc for other options.

  • I had totally unexpected, pretty severe baby blues too for the first couple weeks. I cried a lot and didn't feel bonded with my baby, just this immense sense of responsibility, even though I thought he was totally sweet and adorable. There were some nights at first where I got literally no sleep and that definitely didn't help. After 2 weeks, things got better and better and everything's great now, but the beginning sure was rough. I hope it passes quickly for you!

  • Pretty much what everyone else has said. I was crying all the time and it got worse when the sun went down. I felt MUCH better after about three weeks and I'm completely fine now.

Hang in there. It does pass and you will feel better. It happens to so many women and I wish it was talked about more.

  • Hi there,

I'm right there with you.  I have days where I feel great but days (like today) where I feel overwelmed and unable to do anything right.  I don't get much sleep at night either and It starts to play with my head....last night my baby would not stop crying and I couldn't figure out what was wrong with him.  Finally my husband woke up and within minutes knew how to help him....so much for a mothers instinct!!!!  Oh well, it will get better, I know, we just have to make it thru the next month.  Much luck and happiness to you :)
