Pre-School and Daycare

AM or PM Preschool?

I have a DS who is 2 years, 3 months old and his birthday is the end of November. I am also expecting another baby this summer. Due to some trouble getting pregnant ... dealing with trips to the infertility clinic ...I got a little side tracked on looking into pre schools earlier. I also have limited social interaction and not much financial support. I also became a bit depressed with trying to get pregnant. Lat thing you should know is I'm a stay at home mom so I have felt a bit isolated.

Anyway, DS is used to taking his naps around 1:00. DH and I visited two preschools today and I am starting to get blocked out of morning classes. At first I thought I wanted PM classes because of getting DS and newborn out the door at 8:00 for preschool. Are any of you in the situation where you did PM pre school and regret it? It would be for 2 or 3 days a week for 2.5 hours depending on which school he goes to which depends on if can be fully potty trained by end of July. I am now starting to think I want am, still have a shot but not like if I started looking earlier.

  • I prefer the a.m. also.  My older daughter is a HUGE napper, still, in the afternoon so it was pretty much a no-brainer for me.  I am glad it worked out that way for us because I was able to get the LO on the same afternoon nap schedule so it allows for some "me" time in the afternoon.

  • Levi is 4 and goes all day and they have a nap there. Carly is in day care and goes all day as well and has a nap there. But if I had a half day preference I would say AM.

I prefer morning preshool too. My middle son may be going in the aftenoon next year due to his IEP (we are moving, so that is why I say might). I had no problems getting out of the house with a newborn, 21 month old, and 3 and a half year old in the mornings to drop off the oldest. Did it for 2 years. But, I don't think there is anything wrong with afternoon... just worked better for us at that age. Nect year will actually work fine in the pm, since I will have one fuill day, and one home all day with no naps, so quiet time will be good for him in the afternoon ; ), and one in pm preschool.

  • My boys just started preschool in January, the week after they turned 3. They still nap most afternoons (often for a good 2-3 hrs) so it wasn't much of a decision for us either. And actually now that I think about it, none of the preschools we looked into had afternoon options! I don't think it's common here.

  • At 2, I would go with the AM preschool. DD definitely needed at nap in the PM at that age and whenever she went without one, it was a train wreck kind of day.  Now that she's 4, we've phased out all naps so she's attending PM preschool and happier because she gets to sleep in and play with her brother and tell him how special she is that she gets to go to school and he doesn't (he doesn't care, he's 1).  Oh and good luck on the being fully potty trained!!

  • My dd1 goes afternoons and she loves it. It works perfect into our schedules too. She hasn't taken naps in a very long time though. I think if my dd still took naps or was tired in the afternoon I would of signed up for am preschool.

If you think it's really going to be an issue getting out the door in the morning you could go with pm. Your dc will probably just adjust his naps to after or drop them.
