3rd Trimester

Swelling

I'll be 31 weeks tomorrow and all of a sudden I am VERY swollen. My ankles/feet are almost unrecognizable and I'm even swollen in the face/neck. My rings aren't fitting either. I know that this is a normal part of many pregnancies and my doc doesn't seem worried about it (saw her last week) but I'm just wondering if there's anything I can do to minimize the swelling. I already am avoiding high sodium foods. Thanks :)

Re: Swelling

  • My left foot was hurting and swollen soooo bad, and I have been soaking my feet in epsom salt..it really helps with swelling and pain.

Water with Lemon helps with swelling, but at this point it is mostly here to stay.... but I can definitely notice a difference by watching what I eat and staying hydrated.

  • I find it very odd that your doctor isn't concerned about this.  Excessive swelling, especially in your face/neck is a sign of potential pre-e (not to scare your or anything).  I would call your doctor again and express your concerns.  At the very least, they should get you into the office to check your BP and do a urine test for protein to ensure that it isn't pre-e.  Best wishes!

With DD I was swollen everywhere from 24 weeks on.  My doctor was never concerned because my BP was always normal.  This time I am swollen again (but not as bad as it was with DD) and again no one seems concerned.  My urine always looks good and my BP is normal.  My legs hurt and itch from the stretching but it is all part of my new norm.

I take baths and I let the water lift my stomach off of my hips and then rub my legs and feet.  It helps a bit.

  • I was also experiencing excessive swelling, esp in my feet - best things I have done have been to get your feet elevated above your heart while resting, rest a lot, and strangely blueberries seemed to help me. My feet have managed to come back to normal!! (yay!)
  • I have just had this come on the last 2 weeks as well. I saw my OB on friday and she ruled out pre-e because of good BP and no protein in urine etc. But both the OB and the nurse said that swelling in the face and any real worry you have about this is important and that it would be expected to call in and update them.

As far as helpful tips, this is what I have done and been told, and my swelling has really gone down. Have your feet elevated as much of the day as you can, but dont make yourself seated all day either, keep moving, change positions etc. I bought some compression stockings from the drug store for about $12 that also really did the trick, it helps to put them on first thing in the morning while still in bed, before the water has built up in your legs. Drink more water, eat less salt. Do some exercises that involve stretching then compressing in the legs, like squats or lunges and things, or even lay on your back (with a towel under you) with your legs up the wall and practice some butt clenches/kegels, that will help to drain out the swelling too.
