Were Jane Austen novels required reading in your HS? DH is laid up in bed with pneumonia and is watching tons of movies on his computer. One of them is Pride & Prejudice. I was really surprised to hear he never read it or any other JA novel. I thought it was standard American HS reading...

I read it (and sense and sensibility) but I can't remember if it as in HS or college - that was a LONG time ago! I also had to read a bunch of her poetry - in college for sure.

Yes. I think it was my senior year, & the teacher spent almost the whole year on Austen. I hated it.

We never read any Austen in high school and I totally avoided that type of literature in college, even though I was an English major.

If only! I wish I had read Austen in high school, but I didn't get to read her until college. I only remember reading Shakespeare, Oedipus Rex, Brave New World , and Alas, Babylon in high school... I'm sure there was more, but I can't recall.

I never had to read them in school whatsoever. I feel that my classic literature education was sorely lacking. I was in honor's English, too. I think we spent more time on Shakespeare than any thing else.

I think it depends on your school or your teacher. I had to read it, but my H wasn't familiar with the story until he read "Pride, Prejudice and Zombies" a couple years ago. LOL

It wasn't required at my school, but I feel like my school was going through a "phase" when i was there. I was Honors and AP and never read most of the classics and standard HS reading, instead we read more modern stuff, most of which, looking back, I don't think was age appropriate. The other levels read the classics though...really weird.
