tracking diapers and food...

we've been tracking wet/poopy diapers and ounces of formula taken in since shelby came home from the hospital. how long do you continue tracking this information? for the entire first year?

Re: tracking diapers and food...

  • We stopped around 2 weeks because we kept forgetting to write it down because they (the diapers) were happening so often.  I figured we would notice if she slowed down by that time and she had already grown back to her birth weight, so we were comfortable.  She also ate like a little piggy, so we only kept loose count of her intake.

Our pedi did ask us how much she was eating at each well-check, but she was always fine with a range, like 20-24 ounces or whatever it was.

  • I did it off and on for the first few months and then every now and again just to check how we're doing.

like he only gained ~3oz last month so I'm tracking for the next wfew days until I see the lactation lady.

  • I think I did it for about 8 weeks.  Long enough to see patterns in her :)
  • lol - I didn't even do it in the hospital.  The nurses kept yelling at me about it.  Whatever - I feed her when she cries and change her when the diaper feels squishy :)

That's a ff baby though - its different for bf babies.

  • We just kept track of diapers for a couple of weeks. He ate every three hours like clockwork during the day (bf) and ate at least every 5 hours at night (bottles), so we didn't really try to keep track of what he was getting as long as he ate regularly.

clynn - We changed every 2-3 hours in the beginning plus anytime he pooped. The nightime changes slowly became fewer and farther between as he slept longer stretches. I would estimate we used about 12-14 diapers a day in the beginning. By 7 weeks we were probably down to 8-10 a day and now we use about 6-8. He is a frequent pooper though. :)

  • Oh gosh, I think I stopped tracking that stuff after about a week and a half.  Just until we "graduated" from the LC - when she (and the pedi) was satisfied that he was gaining well and bf-ing was established well, then I pretty much stopped, and just keep track in my head each day (or try to).  Actaully I don't really keep track of diapers anymore but of feedings - how many ounces (if bottle-fed) or how long he nursed, and how long in-between feedings.

I don't know why I do that, because I still just feed him when he's hungry, and I often will think/say "I can't believe you're hungry already again, it's only been 1.5 hours since you ate", but yet, I feed him anyway...I'm just very neurotic and quantitative, and just always feel the need to know how much he's getting.
