Today we went in to the walk-in clinic. LO has been sick for a week, and now he has this red inflamed spot on the opening of his urethra. I began to think he had a bladder infection. Dr starts talking about taping a bag over his penis to try to get lucky and catch some urine to test. And you know, he wasn't as floored as I thought he would be when I told him that LO would pee on cue. He just asked me if one of those "hats" would work. I said of course.
You should have seen the shocked look on the faces of the nurses though when LO gave a urine sample in the hat!! Also, apparently, he had to go, because as soon as he sat down, he pooped, and I had to ask them for a new hat. One of the nurses looked at me as if I were lying, and the other was totally impressed.
Anyhow, this was the coolest EC moment I've had I think. My LO gave his first urine sample today! And could you imagine if they had taped a plastic baggie around him?? Oh, he didn't have an infection, but now we know. (And, I never thought I would be excited/proud of my kid peeing...oh how parenthood changes you!).
Re: AW: My 11 month old was the talk of the clinic today!
Update: it turns out the LO does have a bladder infection. Ha! I was right! Not that I'm happy that my LO is now on antibiotics, or that he hurts, but I'm so glad to know that there is a reason.
The clinic has been so funny (note: I was working with the walk-in people, not the pediatric department). Every person I talk to is shocked that he gave a urine sample. The last nurse I talked to on the phone basically was saying how that the only way to know if a UTI has cleared up is if it doesn't hurt to pee anymore, but of course, how can you know that with a baby? I didn't bother to correct her. THEN the pharmacist told me that it was too bad that he couldn't eat yogurt to help repopulate the good bacteria in his gut. But that's a different AP rant.
