Pre-School and Daycare

Pre-school vs. Playschool

My DD and I are spending next school year in our home state of OR while my husband is away on a military deployment. We have the chance to attend preschool or play school at my mom's work. My DD's bday is Sept 2nd and the cut off for preschool is Sept 1st. The teacher agreed that since we will only be in OR for one year they would allow DD to attend the preschool instead of play school if wanted to.

The play school is 2 years and up. 10 kids, two teachers, and less structure.

The preschool is more structure, 10 kids, two teachers, more learning, and more focus on behavior rather than the play school which is more crowd control.

Both classes are 2 hours 2 days per week.

I don't want to set DD up to fail being the youngest, but I think preschool could be a good option.

What would you do?

Re: Pre-school vs. Playschool

  • honestly, I don't really think it matters that much.  If your DD hasn't been in any kind of structured environment w/ other adults, other kids I would do the play school first since it will probably be an easier transistion.  I'd be leery of any preschool that referred to itself as "academic" at this age.  You want your LO to learn how to share, take turns, be part of a classroom community, etc. not academic tricks.

When I say "academic" I am talking they work on ABC's, recognizing their own name, reading books at story time. So neither program is considered really "academic" so to speak.

  • I don't think it matters that much.  However, does the playschool take children as soon as they turn 2 - meaning in March a just turned 2 year old with be in class with your 3.5 year old.  My friend opted out of an option like that because of the fact that her daughter was going to be so much older/ advance of the other children.  You may want to check ages of the children in playschool before making a decision.

Really good point I will have to ask. I believe they have to be 2 by Sept 1st, but I will double check. Thanks again.
