Daycare Moms-watch please

I hope this link works. It should take you to a video of Dateline NBC's visit to daycare centers around the U.S. where providers are asked about their criminal records and how they are able to operate daycare centers. Shocking!

  • My point: I was just trying to make mom's of children who are in daycare more aware of who is really watching their children. Is that okay?

  • I agree your post is completely unnecessary and only makes parents who have no choice but to utilize daycare feel badly.

I see from your siggy that your LO is a side sleeper, so please watch this video about the "Back To Sleep Campaign" to prevent SIDS:

Thanks for your concern, but DD is not a side sleeper, that's the pose I put her in for that particular picture. Snarky, Snarky, Snarky!!!

  • Thanks for the post. I didn't take it as an insult to all daycare moms. Just an FYI! My center does back ground checks on all employees. I check the state website too looking for any violations.

  • I'm not a daycare mom but I did see that the other day when it aired and I think it's actually kind of irresponsible journalism. A lot of it was alarmist and scary but didn't actually have much to support it. I mean, is it really appalling that someone works in a daycare who was once convicted of writing bad checks? I don't condone writing bad checks, but I also don't think someone who does that is necessarily a danger to children.

  • I think this post comes off a little judgmental and condescending, and maybe you didn't mean it that way, but there are many working moms who are not able to choose to stay home. All working moms I know are aware of how to check on the preschools they choose, such as through the state child and family services.

  • People can change.  I bet some of those people with a criminal record either went through a rehab program or it happened so long ago that it's no longer relevant.  Also, some people are wrongfully charged with crimes.  We do not have a perfect justice system.

Yes, abuse happens at some daycares, but if it was the norm, we wouldn't use daycares as much as we do.  While it's good to know it can happen, that particular video was a bit too fear mongering.  Criminal record =/= abusive daycare worker.

  • I don't think this is a horrible post. Sure it's a scary video, it's meant to scare and make a statement, it is about ratings. However just a few months ago a bumpies 4 month old (I might be off on the age but he was less than six months older than three) died from SIDS from a daycare that falsified their paper work. The baby was left on his stomach for three hours because "he was sleeping so well", not checked on, the angel care system that was supposed to be used was not turned on and her healthy son died and most likely could have been avoided.

I don't think the poster was trying to make people feel guilty but passing along information to be helpful. I think it's silly to say that it would make parents feel guilty for using daycare.
