talk to me about hypothyroid and weight gain (plus sized ladies)

Hey all,

This is my 2nd pregnancy (way different from my first) ...with my first i didnt have  a thyroid issue and I didnt start gaining weight until I was 20weeks pregnant...i gained a total of 25ish pounds (pre preg weight was 190)

This pregnancy I was 182 pre-preg and have gained 10pounds so far!!!!!!!!! I am on 50mg of synthroid and my diet has not changed...in fact im eating less because I go to sleep super early and don't snack as much as i used to...im super super scared to gain more than i'm supposed to (for health reasons, of course)....

my next appt is on the 28th....do you think I shoud go in beforehand? call my dr? thoughts?

  • When was your TSH last checked?  Your medicine may need to be tweaked.

I never had a thyroid problem before now - even now they say it's borderline.  However, after I started taking the synthroid my TSH was good until I got the BFP and then it spiked quite a bit.  So they increased my meds and will recheck my level 6 weeks after the increase.

Maybe you should go ahead and call the doc and ask them to recheck the level if it's been a while.  FWIW, I lost 15 lbs when I first became pregnant and have only gained 4lbs back.  I really think the losing on the weight had to do with the Synthroid as well.

  • I've never been pregnant, but I do have hypothyroidism. My doc has told me in the past that if I was ever to become pregnant, give her a call. She told me that unborn babies rely heavily on our own thyroid levels, especially in the first few weeks and a medication adjustment may be necessary.

It wouldn't hurt to call your doc in my opinion.

  • I just got bloodwork 3wks ago...my energy level is fab (before I was SUPER tired)...i think i'll give 'em a call - it won't hurt.
