Piggy backing almost 5-year-old?

Hi, lurker with a question here.  My almost 5-year-old doesn't really enjoy walking long distances, and I probably haven't helped by piggy backing her frequently.  She is getting big for strollers (50 lbs).  But I enjoy carrying her.  My arms do get tired.  Does anyone know if you can still use an Ergo for that weight?  I read something that said though the recommendation is 40 lbs, Ergo says it can go higher.  Any other suggestions?  Thank you!

  • Oh the Ergobaby website it says it can accomdate up to 40lbs. Given the quality of materials they use they probably could hold more weight but why risk it. She could get really hurt if she fell out.

  • I don't think you're going to be able to find a carrier that goes past 45 lbs as a weight limit. The Boba is designed for toddlers/older babies, and even that only goes up to 45 lbs: https://www.bobafamily.com/faq/page/2/

Do you have a stroller? You can get one of those kickboards that hitch on the back of most strollers, that way your DD can stand on it while someone pushes the stroller. www.google.com/search?q=stroller+standing+platform

  • Maybe it's tiem to teach them to start walking on their own more?

Meh.  It's not as though the girl is going to want to be carried when she's 12.  She'll grow out of it eventually, and they're only little for such a short period of time.  If OP is willing to carry her, I say go for it.

A woven wrap might be a good bet.  Not only will the continuous piece of fabric be less likely to rip versus something with seams/weak points, but wovens distribute the child's weight very well.  I don't know off hand what the stated weight limits of my wraps are, but I can say that I tried a friend's 7 yo in one just for the heck of it, and she felt very secure.  Not that it was the most comfy thing for me being that I'm only used to carrying my 30 lb 3 yo!

    To each her own.

  • Oh, and this is directly from the ERGO site:

ERGObaby recommends a weight limit of 40 pounds (18 Kilograms) for its carrier; however, the carrier has been tested up to 90 pounds (41 Kilograms). Our carrier will accommodate you as long as you and your baby are happy using it.

Looks like you're good to go!  However, keep in mind that the carrier might not be wide enough to get your DD seated properly with her knees above her bum, which could lead to some discomfort for her.  Ideally, the fabric will spread from knee to knee on her.

  • I have not tried one yet but just heard about the kanga XTP carrier for older kids. It has great reviews on the baby wearer website.
