Trying to Get Pregnant

..moving from the east coast

DH and I have been talking a lot about moving. We would either like to move to FL or CA. I have visited California and fell in love. It's just a matter of narrowing it down. Have any of you ladies made a big move? How was the adjustment? Anyone from CA or Fl, please recommend your state! We just want very much to move somewhere warmer and away from where we are currently.

Re: ..moving from the east coast

  • I'm from California and I currently still reside here.

Theres nothing like Southern Cali!!!! ;)

I hope you make the right decision for you and your family.

  • I have lived in San Diego, CA Since college and wouldn't change where I live for the world! I was out this afternoon walking in a tank top and shorts...it isn't the least expensive place to live but DH and I love it!

  • And that's where I fell in love at! Southern California is beautiful, and I went as a teenager and I am certain if I went a bit older I might have stayed or went to college out there. DH and I are planning a huge vacation out there next year, and I am so excited for him to see it.

We lived in Charleston, SC for awhile, and it was amazing.  Sometimes I wish I could still be down there.

I have heard wonderful things about that location as well!

  • I moved across the country 7 years ago - best decision ever. I love the west coat and between FL and CA, I would much rather live in CA. GL!

Wasnt this 84 degree Friday just AWESOME?!!

  • I have lived in Florida and now live in Southern California and definitely prefer CA!  Granted, I lived on the Panhandle in Florida which is very different from South Florida.  The panhandle has it's perks like the gorgeous white sand beaches but I love SoCal.  The weather is perfect and there is sooo much to do!

We moved six times in three years (military) including a cross-country move from NC to CA.  It is an adjustment but if you are living somewhere you love, it is worth it.  Good luck finding the right place for you and your family!

  • I have lived in WI my entire life, so you can take my advice with a grain of salt :D

DH and I almost moved to CA. We did a lot of research, and if DH had chosen the job at a hospital in San Diego, I would be a California resident right now. He worked in FL for six months, and I went with him a lot, and as much as I love visiting FL, I just couldn't live there. It's SO humid and the idea of hurricanes scares the crap out of me.

That being said, FL is a million times more affordable that California, a lot closer to the East Coast (for visit family/friends), and if DH got transferred to FL, I would be just as happy as a clam (compared to WI, the beach is like heaven!)

I feel like the CA vs. FL battle is a long and vicious one, everyone I know who  has lived in one of them over the other feels strongly about it. I would recommend spending a couple of weeks in each place (if your schedule/jobs/finances allow) to really get a feel for it.

Wow, that was long. Sorry :D

    edit: clarified.

  • I moved from Maine to California.  It was exciting at first, then I got a little home sick, now CA is my home.  I'll never leave, I love it here.

  • I am in South GA now, but lived in San Diego for several years and I LOVED it!  Of course last year when I went back to visit the traffic scared the bejeezus out of me, but I didn't mind it when I lived there (maybe because I was used to it?)  It was a great place to live :)

  • Funny you should post this now. DH and I just moved from the Connecticut shoreline to the Raleigh/ Durham area of NC at the beginning of January. His company transferred him down to the the office down here. So far, we're really enjoying it, and I really loved where we were living in CT.

The weather is probably the thing I like the most so far. Since we moved, I haven't had a need to wear my heavy winter coat, and for the past several weeks the coldest it's been during the day is 50 degrees. I like that (so far) we haven't had long stretches of rainy, gloomy days (like you get in New England), and that we've definitely had more sunny days than rainy ones. I also like that trees and flowers are already starting to bloom and the grass is green. This time last year in CT, I was still buried in 3 feet of snow.

I also like that the demographic is a bit younger than where DH and I used to live. I think because the COL is much lower here than where we were living in CT, it makes home ownership much more attainable. Therefore, there are a lot more people our age--young professionals and young families--in this area. Even though we have yet to explore everything, it seems like there is a lot to do in the area (TONS of restaurants, shops, etc.). I also like that there are several universities (I love school!) near by, several hospitals, and a free standing birth center as well as several midwives and midwifery practices. I've also been pleased that it is relatively easy to get access to local foods and farms, in addition to a Trader Joe's and Whole Foods.

Probably the things I dislike the most are the small lot sizes that houses are built on, very few houses are built with basements (where do you put your utility sink!?), and the public school system. I would have felt incredibly confident putting our future children in the public school system where we lived, however, down here DH and I are contemplating what our other options are (private, homeschool, parochial) because I just don't like a lot of what I hear about (from parents, teachers, and the news) and read about the local public schools.

Good luck with your decision. I know it can be difficult. Even though we loved CT (and it was closer to our families), we know that moving here was the right decision.

  • Thanks Literary! That's amazing! I am so scared to move, but DH reminds me that there is so much technology now days and we will give family a nice place to visit.  But I just hate living in NJ! I have pretty much been between Jersey and Philadelphia my whole life and it's time for a major change!

No problem! Since we've moved we've started skyping with our family on a regular basis and I'm surprised how much we like it. Also, by still staying on the east coast it makes it a *little* bit more feasible for family and friends to come visit us.

Over the course of my life, I've lived in MD, MA, NY, CT and now NC. So far this move from CT to NC has been the smoothest and easiest. Good luck and have fun (as much as you can). It was so exciting considering (and then realizing) all the potential a move could offer us!

But I just hate living in NJ!

We're in NJ as well, and DH was just offered a job promotion that would require us to move to Little Rock, AR.  At first I was like "NO way," but the more we looked into it, the more excited we are by the prospect.

He was there once on business and he really liked it because NJ is so congested and hectic while AR is more laid back.  Plus, with the much lower COL out there combined with the raise DH would be getting, I would be able to be a SAHM and we would be able to buy a brand-new 4BR house for $500 a month less than we're paying right now for our 2BR condo!  NJ is just so insanely expensive we don't think we'll ever come out ahead if we continue living here.

We're actually going to be flying out there in a few weeks to check it out, look at homes, and decide if we would be happy living there before accepting the promotion.  It will be very hard to be away from our families, though (we currently live 2 miles down the road from my parents and 7 miles from DH's).  My dad is especially heartbroken because DS has just started calling him "Papa" and he's worried that DS won't really know him anymore if they are separated Crying  I also worry about having the 2nd baby out there without having our "support structure" nearby, but I know we'll make it work.

Good luck with your decision!  I've never been to SoCal but it sounds amazing; I hear San Diego weather is pretty much perfect year-round Wink

This is the way we felt about our move. I was a homemaker for a few months while we were still in CT, but things were tight. Here, we do it rather comfortably. We pay less than HALF of what we were paying rent in CT, for a better apartment. Also our car insurance was cut in half. There are times when I still can't believe it.

  • I'm from south of Tampa in Florida & now live in Denver (we moved for DH to go to school). I love Florida- the humidity can be extreme depending on where you're from, but it's great and I love the beaches and sun all the time!!

This is what MH said would happen as well, which is something I didn't even think of! Sweet!!  I think the average property tax in NJ is $10k/yr and most of the houses we've looked at in AR are like $700-$1k/yr. lol. Crazy how much it varies from state to state!
