I was a nanny/babysitter while teaching kindergarten in the mornings when I was pregnant with DD. I charged $12 an hour for one child and we live in Chicago.
I live in Grand Rapids, MI area. We just started using a sitter (she's a college student) and she said she charges between $5-7/hr. for 1 kid and then $2.50/hr more for each additional. $5 for daytime hours and $7 for evening/weekends since she can't do things with friends. We only have 1 child and actually pay her between $7-10/hr depending on when she comes. Minimum wage is $7.40/hr here so we wanted to stay close to that. We also want her to know we appreciate her taking good care of our little one when we are gone.
My son usually comes to work with me every day but lately I have been dropping him off for a few hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays. One of my good friends lives with her parents and is a SAHM with her daughter. She watches Roman when he wakes up from his nap which is usually noon or 1 until 5 PM on those days. $20 each time.
So that's 4-5 hours for $20.
After baby #2 is born Roman has to go all day for 3 days a week as it's too tough to have both kids at work with me. Friend said she'd do it for $100 solid rate. Those are awesome rates around here.
$15/hr, but it's my sister and it's her primary source of income (she's in college right now). We may be hiring someone who isn't family if I start working part-time, and I'm thinking $12-13/hr for them. We're in Chicago.
There are helpful rate calculators out there on sites like sittercity. I would find it for you but I'm feeling lazy right now. A simple google search would probably turn up a lot. It definitely depends on the sitter's age, your LO's age, years of experience of the sitter and where you're living is probably the biggest factor. It could probably range from $9-20/hour as far as appropriate rate. Check out one of those calculators. Seriously. It's really helpful.

Upstate NY and about $8 or so an hour. We rely on my younger cousins and the oldest set the precedent for payment- she said as long as she gets more than she would have at work (minimum wage job) she's good.
If we know she had a rough time getting DD to sleep or if it's the middle of the day and I know she's had to run around with DD the whole time I'll do more like $10 an hour.

Hope that helps!
Minneapolis/St. Paul area.
$8-12/hour. Depends on the sitter.
Haha that's like us, we pay our moms/parents in desserts!
I think it really depends on your area.
I pay $6-$7 an hour for two kids and the babysitters are in high school.
For daycare (we've actually never had a sitter, other than daycare *while at work* or my parents) we pay 18.08 a day in Missouri...

10-15, but usually round up... i think those 14 year olds are taking me
but really i think a good sitter is worth their weight in diamonds, so i'm happy to overpay a bit...
Chicago, $13-15/hr + cab fare home
...which is why we don't go out often. :P
Our babysitter of choice is his Daycare teacher - $12/hr
High school neighbor - $10/hr

DD's daycare teacher is watching her for 4 hours tonight. I wrote her a check for $60 although she charges $10/hour.
This is our first night with a babysitter and I am nervous.
