3rd Trimester

Swelling in hands and feet

If you have swelling, when did it start?  My weight gain has been right on track (if anything a little slow) but I've gained 5lbs in the last week.  I've just noticed that my rings are tight and my shoes feel tight too.  I am almost 32 weeks and freaking out about it!

Re: Swelling in hands and feet

  • i gained 5 pounds in the last 2 weeks (after gaining nothing in the 2 weeks before that), and my hands and feet have been pretty swollen over the last week. actually, my feet just started swelling in the last few days...
i mentioned it to my dr. and she said it's normal, and the best remedy is "to just have the baby." gee, thanks.

in the meantime i will try to drink more water, eat less sodium and stay off my feet!

  • This is exactly what happened to me.  Slow weight gain, then 5 lbs in one week.  I started to notice my rings were snug right the point where you are now (last week for me, 32 weeks).  My MW said I may just want to remove my rings and wear them on a necklace or not at all.  Booooooo!!!!!  My shoes are still fine, but at night I do notice some swelling when I take off my socks.  I've been trying to elevate my feet each night for at least 20 minutes.  Sorry, no great advice as I'm in the same boat as you.

  • Tell your doctor, try to stay off feet more makes it worse could be fine or somehing developing.

  • I started majorly swelling at 35 weeks.  My doctor is not worried about my weight gain because I am so swollen.  Her suggestions for reducing swelling are like those above:  keep feet up, reduce sodium, drink lots of water.  I have been trying these, but my hands and feet still look like they belong to Shrek.

  • That's about when I started swelling too. I just tried to put them up at night, avoid salty/processed foods and my doc suggested adding lemon to my water because it's a natural diuretic and it has worked wonders!

  • I started swelling at like 24 weeks and haven't been able to wear my ring since then :(. My feet have been swollen too. Luckily I work in a place that is very casual so I can be pretty comfortable. I try to keep my feet up when I can (I keep a short box under my desk that I prop my feet on during the day) and try to make sure that I'm really moving my hands and put them over my head for a few minutes every hour. Extra water seems to be helping a little, too.
  • My hands just started swelling this week. I think the 80+ degree weather also has something to do with it though. I just started not wearing my rings :(

  • Not sure how much weight I've gained since the last doc's visit a week ago, but I can tell you that I'm 32 weeks on Sunday and all of the sudden my hands and feet are swollen all the time, too! (They had definitely gotten bigger before this - stopped wearing my rings in the 4th month - but now it's SERIOUS.) I think this happens to a lot of women around this time....
  • I just noticed swelling around my ankles last week when I was 37 weeks.  No swelling in my hands.  I mentioned it to my midwife and she didn't seem concerned at all.  Also, I'm on my feet a lot so that probably has something to do with it.
